I've never really posted in this part of the forum, citing lack of self-confidence in my lyrical abilities, but after having dug up this lyric from over a year ago, I felt it deserving of posting.

Icarus' Last Stand

Do you remember your first dream?
Do you remember your first flight?
The one that broke your spirits
The one that told you exactly who you are?

I remember you.
I remember the days by the lake, holding hands
I remember the days spent lying in the sun
I remember the days watching the sunsets fade every night
They were the ones that lifted our spirits
They were the ones that made us feel invincible.

But they all seem so empty now that you're gone.
And how can I find myself able to move on?
Without you, I feel helpless to change the things that I am
I search for you in my heart, hoping to find whatever I can

I'll never forget the first time you held my hand
I'll never forget the time you broke your arm on the playground swings
You tried to fly too high
Soaring too free in the summer sky

Do you remember how I used to call you "Icarus"?
Do you remember how we'd joke and laugh all day?
I tried to protect you from yourself
I tried to protect you from the things you'd do

But it all seems so empty now that you're gone
How do I find the will to carry on?
But though I'll never remember your name
I will love you just the same

And one day, we will meet again...
My friend.

So you soar so free in the sky, sweet sparrow.
Sing a song of love and joy for me.
I will take your broken wings
I will take your pain away
And then one day, we'll be free

I remember the way you spoke of flying
I remember the way you spoke of falling
I wish I'd been there when you needed me the most
I wish I could have seen it through my own eyes...

The lyric was written after a particularly traumatizing dream of visiting the grave of an unknown someone I loved very much. The themes of flying and falling refer to the anime Haibane Renmei, and my favourite character in particular, Kuu (she's the one in my avatar). There's a lot of "reading into it" you'd have to do to get it, but to make a long, long story short, in her past life, I imagine that Kuu was probably a girl who was mischievous and had an odd fixation on flying, and probably fell to her death before coming to Guri.

I don't necessarily want to make this comment longer than the lyric itself, so I'll finish it off by saying that the music has been written for this song for a long time as well, and sounds kind of like old Dream Theater, but a bit cleaner. I'll probably post a craptastic recording on my profile someday.

Well, the title was an allusion to one of my favourite classic rock songs of all time. Can you blame a guy? Besides the title, there is absolutely no connection between the two songs, musically or lyrically.

Well, Achilles was invincible till he got shot in the heels. And Plant wrote this song while he was on a wheelchair from a bike accident, so he used the Achilles allusion. Doesn't really hold the water in this case. "Icarus' Last Flight" woulda been much more appropriate.
