im studying genetics atm.
its great fun! really challenging at times (like trying to play a mahavishnu orchestra tune :P)

in regards to jobs, there are plenty of research opportunities going around if you do a bit of networking at uni and plenty of places hire genetics majors to do dna testing (hospitals, police, etc.)

But mainly i think most jobs available are in research.

I did my degree in Molecular Biology, which contains a lot of genetics.

Most geneticists end up in the pharma industry assaying drugs for activity, researching possible drug targets or testing for toxicity.

A smaller percentage go on to academia, and it's got good prospects outside of science too.
