What kind of figurative language is used in more in cannonized poetry (i.e. Shakespeare, Frost, Whitman, Cummings)?

Metaphors
or
Personification?

Metaphors Like Lots

fail.

Metaphor, probably...
If man is 5, if man is 5, if man is 5,
then the Devil is 6, then the Devil is 6, then the Devil is 6, the Devil is 6,
And if the Devil is 6,

then God is 7, then God is 7, then God is 7
This monkey's gone to heaven.

I'm batting for the metaphor team. Really, just think of any of Shakespeare's works and think if you notice more metaphors or more personification.
The will to neither strive nor cry,
The power to feel with others give.
Calm, calm me more; nor let me die
Before I have begun to live.

-Matthew Arnold

Arguments are to be avoided; they are always vulgar and often convincing.

Poetry is a relentless beast,
tearing it's way into the hearts of man
with it's caring and soft teeth.

...

^suck.

But I would say metaphors as I find them most often
Blindfolds aside I'd probably still close my eyes

And try to feel a trembling fetal life inside
that shotgun barrel that's about to make me bleed

Like an ulcer in the stomach of the beast

I don't think I ever came across personification in Macbeth.

Metaphors and/or similies are all over the place in poetry.

He's talking about poetry, plus we've the other geezers to think about. I'm sure Bill managed to slip some personification into those 154 sonnets.

Pedantry isn't an attractive feature, lad ¬_¬

Yeah, pit does his homework...

Metaphors I'm voting though. I've never read a line in a Shakespeare play saying something like "The tree stares at me with blank eyes," but I have heard things like "Her eyes are like an ocean."

yes, im going to ask the pit for their opinions and pass them as homework with no facts to back up said opinions
