if you like the tone of the bass more than that of the guitar, but are better at guitar technique, you have a problem. I guess the easy solution is to play bass with a pick and/or play guitar, but with a warm bassy tone. if you decide on the latter, I'd like to hear your music, would probably be quite interesting.

My friend, you are the bicurious teenager of the music world. You're bass-curious. If your passion is playing bass but you're better at guitar, then you practiced the wrong instrument.

But, I play bass and write all of my guitarist's and drummer's parts, so I'm the wrong person to ask.

I do most of the writing in my band, and I almost never come up with the bass parts first. That's probably because I like to write the guitar riffs and see how the bass fits in

guys i have a similiar question
i think i am a guitarrist with a bass
why do i think so?
1st i played with fingers now i play with a pick all the time, (i know that pick is not only for guitar)
2nd i am really way better in guitar than i am in bass(and i am a good bassist)
3rd i am really fast to come up with a riff in guitar
the only thinks that make feel like a bassist is that i enjoy the low end i am always worried to have the right sound in my band

why do you have to be either? i mean pretty much, if you can play guitar then you can play bass. i play bass, guitar, and drums and i've been told that i am really good at all three. i write most of the stuff for my band, but i still consider myself a guitar player. just because that's what i started out with.

i got the same thing, i cant make guitar riffs but i can make bass lines that keep me happy. i rather like the feel of bass, its less precise, i feel like im more free, dont have to be as exact and technical. i dont know where this mentallity is from, but with guitar i feel like nothing is ever good enough but with bass its jsut play dont give a shit.

i really think im slowly converting myself to a bass player, i pick it up more often than my jackson as of late! and that says something since i absolutely love my jackson-bugera set up.

If you play bass you're a bassist. Bassist = one who plays bass. You can be both a bassist and a guitarist. It's not like you have to pick one or the other.

To be honest, if you play bass it does not automatically pean your a bassist. It means you play bass, nothing more. A bassist is a whole lot more than just someone who sits and plays bass.

But don't listen to me, I've eaten way to much sugar today.

Anyway, why don't you play both? It's not like it's a crime or anything.

Why can't people say what they mean?

Anyways, this thread really is kind of pointless. As it's been stated, a person who plays bass is a bassist. If you in fact play bass then you are a bassist. If you play guitar you are a guitarist. If you play both, then guess what, you play both. It's borderline ridiculous that you would have to ask this.

That's exactly what I mean. Anyone can pick up a bass and say they play bass, but it takes skill to be called a bassist. In my opinion you need to know how to fit into the groove, to be able to drive the band along and have the ability to write a bass line that will fit into what your playing. Not just some one like Herman Ri with four strings.

Your main instrument is obviously the one that you play the most. How is asking a bunch of complete strangers something about yourself that you should obviously know not ridiculous.

No, son no, no one can just pick up an instrument and say they play it. If i grab a shamisen or a bagpipe, does that mean I can play it? No, of course not. If I have a basic understanding of the instrument, and I can manage my way through a few songs then I can play it. As far as driving the band, and fitting in the groove, that's one way of playing bass. Not everyone does it like that. Does it mean they're not bassists? Of course not. That cat from Necrophagist that bangs on his five string, he plays some pretty high runs and quick lines, but does that mean he's not a bassist? That's like saying an abstract painter isn't a painter because painters only paint in a cubist style.

I never said that either.

I realize that there are different ways being a bassist, and I respect that. But the basic role of a bass line/bassist is to drive the band along as a member of the rhythm section, and IMO that a bassist (in most genres) should be able to do that. But I know that everybody's opinion is different, and that different genres call for different roles of each instrument. With a musical taste as diverse as mine, I know that.

And by the way, what's a shamisen? Never heard of one of those before
