o.k.... The Pit is the only place that I could turn to for this one....

I am a senior in high school.... My mom and dad know that me and my girlfriend are planning to get married, just not right after high-school... All they talk about is me going into the military because they have major benefits that would support me AND my gf... I have done research on it and it sounds great, but my gf hates the idea of me goin in the military and I just don't wanna be away from my "baby" for long periods of time.

Now I am asking you guys to help give me some job ideas with benefits and could support us besides the military... there's got to be another way....

Please, I really need help on this, I dont have much time to decide....

Are you going to college?

If not, then the military is the best choice.

If you are, then go to a military academy (Naval academy, ect).

You still get to be in the force for a few years, and you can get tricare from it, and base privileges.
Play the man, Master Ridley; we shall this day light such a candle, by God's grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out.

I would go to college. I happen to be an active duty U.S. Marine, but if you are serious about your gf, the first few years of military duty is relationship suicide. The benefits are good, but you have to weigh out the danger you could (and depending on the branch of service, will) face out of country.

You get health, dental, and life insurance (400 thousand dollar plan)
Retirement (if you stay in for 20 years)
BAH (Housing Allowance based on your grade and if you are E-1 through E-4, don't expect a whole lot)
BAS (food allowance, again not much if you are below E-5)
If you have children you get extra pay depending on number of dependents.

This adds up, but you have to subtract the things that don't combine into cash form like, months away from home, wife, kids, family, really low pay for the job you do, the danger involved, the stress (and it does get insanely stressful, not a whole lot of civilians understand).

I'm not saying the military life doesnt have its moments. But it is a hard life, even if you are good at it. I love it, but very few do, and unfortunately if you decide later that it isn't what you want and what you expected, you are stuck, you have signed a contract and the only way out is to get your EAS (end of active service) years down the road.

My advice. Take your time and figure things out. If you are set on the military, go the officer route. Military academy, or ROTC, which are both great programs. I wish I had taken advantage of those before I enlisted.

Anyways, thats my ten cents.

EDIT: If you want information that recruiters will hinder from explaining, just message me. I am happy to answer any and all questions without a quota I have to fill like your recruiter will. I wont sugar coat it though.

Well why are you marrying a girl then?
I kid, i kid.

You should just try and get any job you can dude, it's better to have tonnes of options rather than just one set goal if you're not going to college.

You need to think for yourself.

Also you need to realise that you're young and there's no particular reason to think your girlfriend is a keeper.

You definitely wont get a career if you do that (if that is what you are looking for). That is more like a 500 dollar stipend at the end of the month. The basic timeline is you train 1 weekend a month, and two weeks out of the year.

You dont get a whole lot of respect though.

EDIT: You will get to see your gf a lot, because you are basically a civilian. You have a different career than that. Most people join the reserves to say they serve their country. But that is about it, not a lot of money, or advancement.

College = Debts.

If you like hands on work, maybe an apprenticeship in one of the trades could work well. Some places will pay for the college classes you take if you stay with them for 5 years. That would be good if you're into that stuff. AMAZING pay.

Im very interested in the public relations field...

so if i join the navy reserve could that help me go to a community college and study in journalism and human resources, get a job working public relations for a company or something? Could I get any benefits from the reserve if i want to do that?

and smb... we've been together for 5 years and we wont get marrie until like 2 years after high school... so if a couple last 7 years would you think thats long enough to get married...

Yeah fair enough - I'm just inclined to be cautious rather than plan too far ahead around a parter. I've made that mistake.
#30
Yeah me and my gf have talked about getting marriend many times so we decided to do it two years after high school that way we'll be able to see how we handle with eachother in "the real world"... which i am confident we wont have problems, unless i dont find a job...

If you are looking for benefits, the reserve is not the way to go. You might as well be working part time, making more money and actually getting benefits. Honestly, in my opinion, you either go active, or don't go at all. Of course I am biased. I could ask some of my buddies who are reserve though and see what they say about it.

But what I know:
Since you are in reserve, you are not an "asset" the Navy as an organization. So therefor, you are not entitled to the same benefits as the active duty personnel. I'm not 100% sure about the way the Navy side works, but I am a marine and we are a part of the department of the navy. You wont get BAS, or BAH (read my first comment if you dont remember what they are), I can guarantee the dependent stipend will cease to exist, and I am not even sure if you qualify for 100% free medical or dental.

Edit: I cannot really give too much advice relating to your relationship issue. I personally don't put much stock into high school sweethearts and stuff, but I have seen more than my share of young, right-out-of-higschool marriages through my military career, very few have worked out. I am not trying to discourage, just be aware of what you are getting into, you do insane amounts of maturing even in the next two years, who knows what will happen. But I do hope for the best with you.
