I want to build a portable battery powered amp. It will be replacing my Little Gem. I like the Little Gem, except I simply cannot get good cleans out of it. Anyone have a suggestion for an amp that I could build and get good cleans out of as well as a little good distortion?

The ruby is a real nice amp from what I hear (and who I heard it from).

You may be able to make it better by taking the LG Mk.1 and slapping in the input buffer of LG Mk.2. I made a schem for it. I call it the Little Gem 1.5. Who wants it?

Sounds good, I might do it. But does it give good cleans as well as good distortion? What about the Ruby?

Dang, does anyone else have experience with the Ruby or any other small battery powered amp that gives good cleans and good distortion?

the Ruby is just a Little Gem with a FET buffer in front.
less of a tone-suck.
more highs, but still limited in power, before distortion.

to get better/louder cleans:
- use a buffer like the Ruby has
- use as high of a supply voltage as the IC is rated for.
- heatsink the IC(s) to prevent overheating.
- bridge the outputs of 2 LM386s (one driven out of phase)

That was going to be my suggestion.

I think if your looking for lots of headroom a 9V mini amp isnt going to get you there.

Good to see you back SYK.

How can i add an on/off switch to my little gem?
Are you trolling, kid?

if you actually built a little gem, surely you can figure out how to add an on/off switch.

excuse him, thats my little brother, hes new to the forum and obviously has alot to learn. Look at how old this thread is that he bumped. He was trying to help me out with the little gem amp I am building for him. The problem I came across with the switch is that it was missing 4 terminals and I didn't notice it.

didn't realize he was doing that I'll talk to him about doing that. Its definatly not me, I've been here long enough to know how things are supposed to be, if he continues feel free to report him, a short ban should help him learn his lesson.
