I'm a dork. And I sometimes play chess at lunch with other dorks. And the other day, my friend made a move and said:

"That was an eminently clever move."

I called him out on this use of the word, and he refuses to admit he was wrong. What does UG have to say in the matter? We tried referencing the dictionary, but it didn't solve anything.

Making you both pretentious dorks.

EDIT:
1. high in station, rank, or repute; prominent; distinguished: eminent statesmen.
2. conspicuous, signal, or noteworthy: eminent fairness.
3. lofty; high: eminent peaks.
4. prominent; projecting; protruding: an eminent nose.

oh that is great!

For what it's worth I agree with you that that word doesn't work in that sentence... at least not the way he said it anyway.

Edit: I guess calling it an eminent move would be ok, but eminently clever is wrong... wrong I tells ya!

Maybe he meant "immanently"

1. Existing or remaining within; inherent: believed in a God immanent in humans.
2. Restricted entirely to the mind; subjective.

Which still doesn't make sense.

EDIT: Or 'Imminently'

Which pretty much means it was likely.
