Hey I've been playing guitar for a few years and recently found the urge to learn how to play the bass. Now i know i will be able to transfer over some of the basics, but i DO know the bass is a whole new beast.

So, UG, I have a few questions about which bass to get.

I know a want a bass on the cheaper side (bass + amp has to be less than $400), but I do not want a piece of crap. I am a musician, and I can tell the difference in quality. So, what does UG think of the following basses/starter packs.

Epiphone Thunderbird IV starter pack. thunderbird

Fender affinity P bass p-bass

Ibanez IJXB190 starter kit ibanez

I like classic rock, modern rock, ska, punk etc. along those lines.

I am open to other suggestions!

until you give me a type of music (which may or may not change my suggestion) I'd say the below sig has some major goodies.

I got the Fender P-Bass kit. It's a good bass, and cheap if you go looking around Guitar Center. The amp isn't too great, and the pickups do get anoying at times, but it's nothing you need to get hyped over.

You'll probably want the Ibanez, although Cort do a very similar bass which I'm a huge fan of
Gear:
Washburn RB2500 (5 String)
Yamaha BB400 Fretless (1981)
Carlo Giordano 3/4 Upright (White)
Cort Action 4 (Stereo-fied)
Orange Bass Terror 500
Orange 1x15 Cab
Boss GT-6 Bass Multi-effects

Haha no way. That retort could NOT make any less sense, yet it was still the baddest-ass burn... with a report to go with it!

>> + 10 rhythm points <<

And Osama's gone! I'm going to have to get used to this weird flowery thing. But I like it.

...Anyway, though Humanity's starter pack is pretty much what I'd suggest too, this thread is spawned about 10 times a week. There's an FAQ, and as I just made clear, TS, you have asked a frequently-asked question. There's a great section on starter gear in there, give it (the whole FAQ while you're at it) a nice thorough read.

...Coincidence? I think not.

and this thing is a 4 way happy face. see it?

alot of people i know say that the starter packs are crap. that being said, id recommend the squire jazz bass, vintage 70's remakes. they play GREAT, and are only about 270, and there are plenty of great practice amps under 100 bucks.
Peavy Cirrus 5 string
Squire Jazz bass
Berhinger ultrabass head, 450 cabinet

yeah, the Tbird isn't liked much around the bass forum for obvious reasons.
It even has it's own thread, you should check it out.

Read the FAQ. It has all the advice you could possibly need at this stage of being a bassist.

You know Ben, you promised me that this would all end with the FAQ. I may just have to start up the URGE II fund again.

Lol--I'm sorry thread starter--but seriously the FAQ is going to be your best source of information for starter bass and amp information, along with a host of other fun facts to get you going. My advice--read the FAQ and then come back again with any questions you have.

And welcome to the bass forum--we're a fun bunch; even the mods. And for the story of the Urge Fund, just read the FAQ. I used to throw 5 USD in the pot in the pre-FAQ era for everytime someone asked "what bass should I buy"
