My math teacher divided by zero a couple weeks ago, showing why we shouldn't divide by zero. This is what he wrote:

a=b, but both are nonzero numbers

a = b

(a^2) = ab

(a^2) - (b^2) = ab - (b^2)

(a+b)(a-b)/(a-b) = b(a-b)/(a-b)

a+b = b

2b/b = b/b

2=1

If a=b, a-b=0.

a=b, but both are nonzero numbers

a = b

(a^2) = ab

(a^2) - (b^2) = ab - (b^2)

(a+b)(a-b)/(a-b) = b(a-b)/(a-b)

a+b = b

2b/b = b/b

2=1

If a=b, a-b=0.

liar

#3

when

a=b

how can

a+b = b , be?

maybe im just to stupid for math

#4

there's a mistake in that...

if a is 0 and b is infinity, same thing 0_0

#6

my math teacher did the same thing last year in precal where she posted that 1+1=1 using a similar formula, there is a flaw, i just forget what it is and I don't think that its what Toast1337 pointed out, although it is a good point.

0/0 is infinity

How many times can you take nothing from nothing, or how many times can you take no sweets from no sweets. Infinity

How many times can you take nothing from nothing, or how many times can you take no sweets from no sweets. Infinity

I force choke storm troopers who come to me with this crap. They always try to show me how they are smarter than their sith lord.

Seriously, this is the stuff that Jedi sit around and do in their free time. You wanna do math? Get up and get you some Calculus. Math that actually is useful and can be used for spreading evil. That is your first step in harnessing the dark power of numbers. Not this crap.

explain this move.(a^2) - (b^2) = ab - (b^2)

(a+b)(a-b)/(a-b) = b(a-b)/(a-b)

You know, the whole Star Wars roleplay thing started to lose ROFL-factor shortly after you began doing it.

(a^2) - (b^2) = ab - (b^2)

(a+b)(a-b)/(a-b) = b(a-b)/(a-b)

How are you getting between these two stages?

(a+b)(a-b)/(a-b) = b(a-b)/(a-b)

How are you getting between these two stages?

I cbf to go check but I think when you have a 0 in the numerator it goes into the realm of the undefined

if you've only got a 0 in the denominator thats where you get the infinity stuff happening if you put in some limits and such...

#14

^^

lol, beat you.

lol, beat you.

#15

(a+b)(a-b)/(a-b) = b(a-b)/(a-b)

That makes no sense. Go apologise to the universe. Now.

#16

0/0 is infinity

How many times can you take nothing from nothing, or how many times can you take no sweets from no sweets. Infinity

No... you can't take 0 from nothing because there's no value to take and no value to take from.

#17

You know, the whole Star Wars roleplay thing started to lose ROFL-factor shortly after you began doing it.

Leave Vader, Darth alone.

And you can't divide by zero.

#18

(a^2) - (b^2) = ab - (b^2)

(a+b)(a-b)/(a-b) = b(a-b)/(a-b)

How are you getting between these two stages?

well, a^2-b^2 does equal (a+b)(a-b), and then ab-b^2 can be factored into b(a-b), then he is just dividing (a-b) to get rid of it on both sides

#19

It doesn't matter. The first line there says 0=0. Anything after that is meaningless.(a^2) - (b^2) = ab - (b^2)

(a+b)(a-b)/(a-b) = b(a-b)/(a-b)

How are you getting between these two stages?

#20

They think they are so cool by manipulating a 0 = 0 equation to say 0 = 0 once again.

#21

no, shitty substitutions stillIt doesn't matter. The first line there says 0=0. Anything after that ismeaningless.

**mean**the work was flawed.

#22

no, shitty substitutions stillmeanthe work was flawed.

But subsequent steps after saying 0 = 0 are still

**mean**ingless.

#23

Yeah it's mathematical masturbation.They think they are so cool by manipulating a 0 = 0 equation to say 0 = 0 once again.

#24

Math teachers are all bad these days.

a = b?..

can someone please tell me how this oculd possibly make sense?..

I disagree. I know

*one*good one.

Yes...

The statement 1 = 1 makes sense, does it not? If a = 1 and b = 1, then a = b -> 1 =1.

I disagree. I knowonegood one.

I'm talking about this new generation of math teachers - the ones that graduated within college and started teaching within the last five years. The old ones are mostly good.

(a+b)(a-b)/(a-b) = b(a-b)/(a-b)

If a=b, how do you multiply by (a-b)? Not just division, but multiplication by zero, so it all goes down the sh

**itter lol.**

#35

tru dat.But subsequent steps after saying 0 = 0 are stillmeaningless.

but that only holds true for a singular instance where 0 = 0

shitty substitutions wreck havoc universally.

#36

I plan to be a maths teacher if ever I finish my degreeMath teachers are all bad these days.

mostly because I hate how badly taught maths is

Please be a good one. There needs to be more than one of them in the world.

And this country has to have a proper system of teaching it before year 10.

#39

a = b

(a+b)(a-b)/(a-b) = b(a-b)/(a-b)

(a-b) = 0

a+b = b(a-b)(a-b)

a+b = b(0)(0)

a+b = 0

WRONG

(a+b)(a-b)/(a-b) = b(a-b)/(a-b)

(a-b) = 0

a+b = b(a-b)(a-b)

a+b = b(0)(0)

a+b = 0

WRONG

#40

Yeah that's what's driven me to it - most maths teachers are really really shit. Anyone can learn GCSE maths.
