I've been playing guitar for only about 10 months or so...I'm lefty but i play regular guitars. i think i'm decent for the amount of time i've been playing, but i'm still a noob so here it goes:

I've gotten to the point where i can play some simple 5 string sweeps at a pretty fast speed, but since i play with a lot of distortion usually it sounds dirty and muddy when i play them full speed because of other notes ringing out from after i play them (sort of like a pull off. I'm not just holding chords and strumming dw.)

is there any special way to prevent this? i'm playing on the pickup that isn't as "ring-ie" (i'm not sure if this is the bridge or the neck pickup, i always get them confused). I've heard of palm muting strings that you aren't playing but i have no idea to go about this.

i've said this already: I AM A NOOB, so please, save yourself some time and either post something helpful or not at all.

If you angle your pick the way you are sweeping and use ur palm to mute the strings after you go past them you shouldn't have a problem

personally iv never experienced this problem but i hear that works

BTW:

i use fender heavy picks ( 1mm)

Is this part of the problem?

And rory i don't know exactly what you're saying. I've tried palm muting those strings but i didn't get how to do it without hindering my sweeps.

I use a dunlop Jazz 3, u might wanna try that??

erm i just picked up my axe and tried to look at wt the palm was doing, my pick was just ahead of my hand and the muting was coming abt 1/2 way down the side of my hand...its just awkward 2 explain

mayb u shuld just experiment a little ?? I hav problems with PH so im just doing them over, mayb repetition will work

How clean is your playing in general - I really think you're rushing things if you're attempting sweeping after such a short time.

I really don't have much problem with cleanness with regular playing. but that might be the case.

I'm going to try new picks and see if i can find a way to mute well.

Otherwise i'll just put sweeping on hold and work on technique in general for a while.

I know this isn't the right thread, but any one have a link on hand of excercises to get my technique faster+cleaner on shredding in general?

Wow i'm retarded.

i turned the volume and tone knob down a bit on my guitar, added a little delay and i was sweeping like a mofo just a min ago.

-.-

sounded cleaner and better imo...

on my fender, i switch to the middle and neck pickups (i have a fat strat) and it cleans them up a lot better than sweeping with the bridge pickup. i can still to it on the bridge, just not as cleanly. maybe try doing something like a less pressed-down palm mute when raking up and down the strings

The moral of the story is that you should learn to sweep after 10 months and use effects to clean up your playing.

No, If I wanted to be sigged I would've mentioned your Line 6.

You must really be good to get to sweeping after 5 months, though. Nice.

WHOOPS ten months
