Tube overdrive/preamp pedals use an actual tube for amplification/ clipping. There isn't a difference between the "tube pre amp" and :tube overdrive", they're just signal processors using tubes

from what i understand blackstar pedals also use actual tubes, so how are they different from preamps?

The damage control preamp can work as a cabinet model (you can DI it and not use an amp), which makes it different from a tube drive pedal, such as an Ibanez TubeScreamer. A tubescreamer could be considered a "preamp" though because it acts as an amplification and signal-processing device that modifies the signal before it reaches the amp.

Yeah this is correct. Basicly its a preamp because you can use it without an amp. You can still use it as an od.
