I'm considering building an SG-shape guitar. I am not looking to build anything too complicated, will probably use either a Bigsby/Vibrola or a stop-bar tailpiece just for simplicity's sake. I may buy a pre-finished neck off eBay and do custom inlays myself. Opinions/Advice is more than appreciated.

I'd also like opinions on what type of cheaper pickups I should be looking into.

Sounds cool.
Id go with the bigsby, its got that retro-coolness vibe.
GFS makes some good cheap pickups, but some people dont like em.

yes, gfs for pickups,

or rockfield, all humbuckers are 50$ (i personally love them, recomend a fatass in the bridge+ swc coil tapped in neck)

for necks, try wmd-way better than paying too much for warmoth

bump. what type of wood would be easiest to work with/cheapest? My eventual plan is to paint it either worn brown, dark blue, white, or i am going to add a thin veneer top to it (probably walnut or spalted maple) Opinions on colour are welcome and i need to know about the wood

Poplar is fairy easy to work with. I love it. Kind of soft and very ugly so it would HAVE to be painted or have a top put on it. Its cheaper than most other woods. Also if you are die hard in believing that the wood choice effects the guitars tone on a high percent, then you'd be safe in knowing that its tonely similar to alder.

Hope this helps any.

Cheers!
