Hey

How could i improve the soloing tone of my 6505? without actually modifying my amp?

It really seems too muddy, but could that be the pickups? i doubt it is as it sounds near enough the same with all my guitars.

and, what would and emg 81 in the neck sound like?

thanks in advance

Add some mids, cut the bass down some too. Add some treble. Maybe purchase an overdrive or EQ pedal. Or it might be the speakers in your cab.
#4
compressor pedal will smooth out the top end, id use and overdrive so you dont have to change settings the over drive should add a heap of mids.

what speakers are you using?

get an overdrive, and just kick it in on your rhythm channel to get a lead tone

edit: and have your neck pickup tone control rolled off to say 5-7, then flick your pickup switch to the neck pickup for soloing aswell

I can get a great soloing tone on my 5150 combo with my Ibanez on the neck pickup (PAF Pros), even playing at really low volumes (post gain at ~1)

My settings are usually something like this:
Pre-Gain - 4-5
Low - 6-7
Mid - 4-5
High - 5-6
Resonance - 7-8
Prescence - 2-4

and of course, full volume on my guitar.

I like a bassier sound in my lead playing, which the Low and Resonance helps achieve, yet I still get cutting high sounds. Just play around with it.

There are also lots of websites for tone settings on the amps. Just google 5150 settings or something.

what are your settings (amp and pedal)?

you might want to cut back on the gain.

Mid .5
High 6.5

try

pre - 6
post - whatever volume is necessary (you won't get a fantastic tone at low volume though)
bass - 5
mid - 7
treb - 6
resonance - ? dunno what it is to be honest
presence 5

that should give a tone which will cut through the mix nicely, try it and mess about. my opinion about solo tones is that they should generally have decent mids (to fill the sound out) and treble (adds a bit of bite).

but that's just me.

HALF a mid in there?!! i've heard that 5150's have a bit of mid in them already, but that really seems to be the problem here...no way on earth should your mids be THAT low...

if all else fails, an EQ can probably clear a lot of things up. but really a new cab would do more justice

if your lead tone is too muddy, get either an EQ, BBE Sonic Maximizer or a Compressor pedal. there's a cool "dumbed down" video of how a sonic maximizer works.

do NOT use an Overdrive. adding more gain will only muddy things up more. instead, crank back the gain and use the OD more for a boost. also, if you use hotter pickups with high gain, it muddies thing up terribly.

There really aren't any bad EQ pedals, honestly.

Ok then, it would depend on your budget. Low budget, Danelectro Fish n Chips or DOD 7 band EQ. Mid budget, Boss GE-7. Higher budget, MXR 10 band EQ or Boss 10 band EQ.

something like that?

Seems pretty cheap.

Mm, actually that's probably the one I'd stay away from. It's probably not bad at all, but I doubt it's that reliable. In that price range just go for the Danelectro or the DOD.
