i was reading scar tissue(anthony from rhcp's autobiography) last night, and read something that really caught me off guard. at one point BUCKETHEAD auditioned for the red hot chili peppers! i know that he is a really bizzare person, and i love his work, im seeing him on the 20th, but it just doesnt fit in with the chili's, they're all wacky, but he's just weird. it would have been interesting, but im very glad he didnt become part of the chilis.
this got me thinking, have there been any other bands that had a member that just didnt fit in with the look or style at all, or nearly had them join? buckethead in rhcp seems like the equivilent of b.b.king in judas priest. it just doesnt fit.

Yeah, I remember reading that and I was like "Thank god they didn't pick him."

Don't get me wrong, he's a good guitarist but John Frusciante is just ten times better.

Or Jeff Loomis who also auditioned.

Mustaine told him to go home and practice haha...now he could rape him with his guitar :P

yes he did and the reason metallica said they didn't choose him is because he was too good.

Nothing huge but the vocalist from All that remains auditioned for Killswitch Engage i believe.

Its funny he left shadows falls, started ATR, then tried out for Killswitch.

technique-wise, buckethead wins.. but in skill (emotion, soul, that feel of happiness in most of his songs..) John wins, he is just perfect for them

Dimebag in Megadeth.

Or Jeff Loomis who also auditioned.

Yeah, only reason Dime didn't get the gig was because he said he'd only join if his brother could be in the band but they already had a drummer. Didn't know Loomis auditioned, though...
Buckethead also auditioned for Ozzy at one point, and he was offered the gig but Ozzy said he had to take off the bucket and mask. Buckethead said no, so no gig. Ozzy later called Buckethead weird, which should tell you something. Since when does Ozzy find people weird?
I'm still trying to figure out how Bumblefoot in GnR works.

I'm sure you haven't heard enough of Buckethead to form that sentence. Listen to the albums "Population Override", "Colma", "Electric Tears"; and the songs "Mrs. Beasley" and "I Love My Parents."

I hate this Bucket-ignorance; he doesn't always play "technical" songs.

The reason RHCP didn't want Buckethead in the band is because they didn't feel he was funky enough.

Which is a crock of shit. Its because Buckethead would steal the show from them all night, every night.

Edit: Which reminds me, Ozzy wanted him. But he changed his mind when Buckethead refused to let Ozzy call him by his real name, and because he refused to talk to Ozzy maskless.

Axl also thought he was a weirdo because he is inspired by porn. And fecal matter.

I've seen him playing Machine Gun by Jimi Hendrix and doing a version that is very good. Why wouldn't he be able to play simpler songs like those and have feeling with them?

Well, he was using quite a calculated figure, maybe he sat down with 2 songs and picked apart pieces of each.

there's a graceful sloppiness to RHCP's songs, and buckethead isnt sloppy at all.

i love buckethead, and all the people saying that he isnt emotional are just wrong. songs like padmasana and whitewash show his capabilities as a slower player, while nottingham lace and soothsayer demonstrate just how amazingly perfect he is as a player.

he could fit in to RHCP, but i prefer him not being limited to that graceful sloppiness. he is an amazingly diverse guitarist, and RHCP would have limited him as a player.

i do love RHCP, by the way - not trying to have a stab at them.

Suposably flea or anthony (i dunno) said that "He couldn't kick a groove like john" I agree he's to technical to be in the RHCP, I mean RHCP's have so much emotion and John only has to hit a few notes in his solos to make jaws drop, dont get me wrong Buckethead is a freak with the guitar but like i said he's to technical and he just wouldn't fit in with the RHCP

I dunno why you'd say that. Have you not heard some of his albums? Like what he did with Les Claypool, a lot of which was pretty humorous. Or his first solo album, which is full of jokes? I mean, look at the man's song titles. Frankenseuss Laboratories.

Personally, I'm glad he didn't get the gig. I hate RHCP.

I don't think so.

It never mentioned that in his auto-bio, and he (and the rest of the band) was definitely against the image that Poison and other hair-metal bands were portraying and were all about at that time.

I wonder what he played for em, because he can definitely groove and lay out the funk and blues Frusciante puts in RHCP songs.

You have to remember that Buckethead had never heard RHCP when he actually did the audition, so he may have just a ton of shredding. Who knows. If they heard some of the funky playing he did with the likes of Bernie Worrell, and then they turned him down.. they're nuts. Especially if they opted to play with Dave Navarro over him.

Oh shit.
I neglected realize the fact that the auditions were in '92, no?
Closest thing to funk for him then would be with the Deli Creeps i think, cuz Zillatron didn't form til '93.
