That isnt insanely ballbusting. I can play hangar 18 and the first verse of steve vai's "i would love to", just to give you an idea of skill. Just nothing with to many sweeps or marty friedman.

Definately YYZ by Rush, it's the easiest of all the insanely cool instrumental songs I can think of.

Oh, and also Orion by Metallica

Oh Yeah.

Jessica by the Allman Brothers is a wonderful instrumental song.

Lenny, Testify, Rude Mood and Little Wing are all great SRV tunes (Little Wing is originally an Hendrix song).

If you're more into shred, Crushing Day by Satriani is my favourite, but it's f*ckin hard to learn, specially the solo. Cliffs of Dover is also really nice.
You still have 'easier' but still nice Satriani songs, like Always With Me Always With You.

Cliffs of Dover = +1.

Stuff that I enjoy and suggest, instrument-wise would be:

Megadeth - Blood of heroes, and Angry Again.
Metallica - For Whom the Bell Tolls, and Ride the Lightning.
Symphony X - Sea of Lies (good luck).
Malmsteen - Rising Force (too hard full speed, still fun at slower tempo).
Children of Bodom - Lake Bodom, and Children of Decadence.

If you're a metal fan, I promise this stuff will be stuck in your head. The last 3 suggestions are very hard, for me at least. I like to play in sections.

I can't believe noone mentioned Petrucci's Glasgow Kiss yet.
Actually, most of the songs on his 'Animate Inanimate' are pretty kick-ass, and they're not all that hard.

No, I'm not smoking anything.

They're tricky, but you have to challenge yourself in your playing. Playing stuff that you can play effortless anyway is a sure-fire way to get yourself lazy.

Unless your just trying to expand your song-vocabulary, which in that case, doesn't really matter.

Still, I stand unaffected, Animate Inanimate kicks ass. Some of the riffs on there are tricky, but just like a good chunk of all JP/DT stuff, it's regular stuff made tricky through patterns, rhythms, etc.

Maybe Belguim Tom's Hat Trick by Whitesnake?

Sadly, no backing tracks or anything, you'd have to download the song and work it out. And it's not metal, so I guess I'll just pretend I said nothing.

Ach well.

To live is to die is an awesome song, but it is way too layered to enjoy playing imo. I can't stand playing guitar and knowing that there is 4 other parts I could be playing. Don't know why.

But Orion is a pretty good instrumental, the solo's are pretty easy and really fun to play.
