Okay so guys, I have a pretty large problem here. I was just browsing a site (it rhymes with 4 Dan) and I clicked on a link posted on said site. It wasn't anything suspicious at first, but then the window that it opened minimized a little and started floating around the page (exactly like a rick roll does). There were some freaky/gross pics and a bunch of my other applications on my PC started opening randomly. I thought this was some sort of virus so I quickly unplugged my modem and shut off my PC.
After this, I restarted it. Everything seemed fine. I browsed around a little and in a freak out decided to clean out some of my apps that I never use - toolbars, just random things I've downloaded over time. I didn't delete anything of any importance. At all. But I restarted my computer, and get a blue screen (no, not THE blue screen) telling me about how my C might be messed up blah blah blah disk checking. So I initiated disk checking, and it stopped after step 2. At a hault, I restarted my computer and again but this time I skipped disk check. It took me to my usual log in screen.
Now here's where I don't know what to do. If I log in, will I log in to all my files missing, or if I log in will it screw up in a huge mess and delete everything. I'm mostly worried about my 3,500+ songs of music in my iTunes right now. So here I am at the log in screen. What should I do?

Sorry for the wall of text.

you should boot up xp installation cd and run system file repair, so possible infected system files will be replaced with new ones. If you have multiple partitions on your hard drive or a place online where you can back up your important files, you could boot up Linux live CD or put the hard drive in another computer and back it up there, what ever the hell you need to back up. Then boot up in save mode and if you have some kind of spyware removal software, such as 'spybot search and destroy', you should run that. You can give Linux a shot, you won't have to worry about viruses and all that bullshit.

.. and stop clicking porn adds! I can't even count how many people got their windows screwed up because of visiting questionable sites.

you fail

It would be fail if he didn't have a rickroll avatar, that makes it win.

Just login, download this http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html?part=dl-AVGAntiVir&subj=dl&tag=button

run a full scan, and delete whatever viruses show up.

Honestly, I'm a computer repair guy and I'm studying for my CompTIA A+ cert, don't worry about it, you prolly got a virus, its nothing that can't be fixed, run a scan and backup your files on a thumb drive(11bucks for a 4gb at newegg free ship), worst comes to worse give me a pm .

how do I run a systems diagnostic?

IMPORTANT: When I logged onto my computer, I got a popup that said: "aim6.exe - corrupt file. The file or diretory C:\Documents and Settings\John\Local Settings\Application Data\AOL\AOLDiag\AOL\IMAppServiceUSGM\Win32\6.5.12.1\permdata.box is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility."

However, I CAN run aim. So I guess I have to download something I must have deleted on accident, right?

Uninstall/reinstall AIM, or better yet download trillian instead.

This is why you keep a linux partition handy - you know, when you're surfing PoorDan.com ...
<.<
>.>

Or surf it through a virtual machine.

Seriously though, if you think you have a virus just backup your data and reformat. You can try running a System Restore (you're using Windows right?) and see if it makes any difference.
#28
first, that sounds like a trojan and or someone is in your computer and doing this. probly with prorat or something.
best thing to do is bring your harddrive to a specialist to take the bitch out cause the torjan or worm or IDK its bad and you dont give enough to determine what it is. the guy should be able to clean it out and save your other files if it hasnt already deleted everything.
