I wish I had some synths. =/

I have FL Studio, but haven't used it a whole lot, and don't know how to use it well at all.

I just need to invest in REAL synth/electronic equipment and learn the hard way.

mircokorgs are very nice. the keyboardist in my old band had one and i would always play around with it tons of stuff you can do on it.

I own a Korg X-50... it's great fun to mess around on, but I have no way of connecting it to my computer as of now, so I can't really compose anything. That sucks.

Ahh.. I want one. I saw a vintage moog on craigslist and I was so tempted to buy it. I took 8 years of piano, so it would be worth it to own one, especially since I've moved out and don't have anything to practice on.

Hmm well I guess Nine Inch Nails got me into synth... so sort of really glitchy and textured sounds. I'd like to use synths as leads and for atmosphere.
That's about it I think.
Other bands I like with synth: Beck, Radiohead, Animal Collective, Muse.

Textured Sound: Look no further, the DX7 or DX7II is what you need. (Had mine at around $180 bucks)

Leads/Atmosphere: Analog or Virtual Analog especially for pads. If you have something with VST-plugin capabilities then go for the "Synth1" which is free and great sounding.

Ok great, I'll check all of that out. Thanks.

What's the brand name of the DX7s?

Ha I guess, but I haven't completely learned how to use all of Reason yet. Its pretty complex for someone who doesn't go to MIT.

Recommend me a cheap keyboard synth that will get me far more then my money's worth in quality and versatility. Good for studio and live work. Being used as a MIDI controller for recording on my computer is a definite plus. Must have a good basic piano sound/function to it.

Basically I'm looking for an all-in-one deal. And no, I really don't know much about what I'm talking about, I just want one good keyboard that can do several different jobs so I can save time, space and money.

What kind of synth would I need to sound like Genghis Tron and/or Aphex Twin?

I've found a site with some of Twin's equipment, but a lot of it is really rare and such.

Genghis Tron's electronics are just amazing, IMO, as well, and anything to help me gain that sound would be amazing.

I know this may sound stupid... but what's the difference between a keyboard and a synth? Is there one? Like, are synths just controllers for MIDI instruments?

And since I have Garageband, can I just hook up a synth to my computer and use that instead of the infernal "musical typing"?

Sorry if you're not completely into the metal aspect of it all, but their electronics are amazing (the entire band's amazing, but still. )

"Board Up the House", "Chapels", and "Arms" are a pretty decent indication of things I like from them on that page.

First:
A Keyboard is a name usually used for everything that has a musical keyboard(piano, organ, synth, etc.)
MIDI Controllers: as the name implies, MIDI control
A Synth makes sounds and usually has a keyboard.

Second:
Yes you can hook your synth via a MIDI/USB interface and record the MIDI messages in real-time on garageband.

I hear Drum Machines(FL Studio has plenty of those, also Rebirth, which is now abandonware), and a Virtual Analog, and like I said earlier: "Synth1" is a must for that. And it's free.

my great uncle was in a band called Chicory Tip in the 70's over here in the UK
they had a number one hit (only a couple of other minor/top 20 ones)...and apparently it was one of the first major hits to use a moog or any kind of synth

so i thought that was pretty cool
i dunno tho, you guys probably don't care lol

I like you. Especially your sig quote.

The only thing youve said that throws me off is your PSR recommendation.

Also, the DX series is kind of useless in modern application, especially with MIDI and the cheap and useful synth market offering things like the alesis micron. That thing kicks ass and its all anyone EVER needs for intermediate keyboard application.

Yeah, I know what drum machine they use, so I'm good with that (ez Drums Drumkit from Hell on their latest album) and I'll check into Synth1 and ReBirth.

Yeah the Moog synth became mainstream in those days, and I listened to "Son Of My Father" and I like it a lot.

Moog History Class 1: In 1971, "A Clockwork Orange" was the first motion picture to feature the Moog synthesiser, played by Walter(now Wendy) Carlos.
