i play a whole lot of RHCP, and have a band that does a lot of covers for them, but also does some heavier stuff, not any death metal or black metal or anything like that. what would be a good amp for that, and some heavier stuff like gnr and iron maiden? and what would be a good guitar/pickup combo for chili peppers stuff, i already have a guitar for metal (an ibanez art300) it can be $800 max for the amp, which is what my parents are getting me as a christmas and birthday present combined, and im saving up for the guitar. the amp doesnt have to be superloud, but enogh for small to medium gigs.

amp: peavey classic 30 (will do maiden for sure, metallica max though, no death metal without a good overdrive)

Guitar: Fender MIM strat, MAYBE replace the pickups (you might not want to, they are alright pickups)
if you do replace the pickups, lace sensors are nice, same as the fender texas specials

First off nice guitar. I have the ARC300 and love it. I wouldn't call it a metal guitar, but it will get you there with the right amp. Certainly can do GnR and Maiden.

Ampwise, this is my recommendation. I realize you aren't ready to buy now - but I'm giving you some examples.
http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/mld/msg/861402226.html Laney VC15 - asking $450
http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/msg/860555949.html Carvin Tube Combo, $375
http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/msg/859343242.html Tiny Terror Head - asking $500. You would need a cab with a speaker to produce sound obviously, but cabs with speakers go for $250-$300.
There were some more, a good Marshall JMP50 head for $700, and a Windsor Head and Traynor cab for $375. But those are complete overkill for what your wants are.
At $800 new, I would go with the Traynor 50watt mentioned or Classic 30. (Both of which pop up on craigslist for around $300-$450.
I wondered why the frisbee was getting bigger, then it hit me.

Frusciante uses Strats mostly, but you'll want a humbucker for switching to metal. My suggestion would be a Tele with a single-coil in the neck PUP and a bucker in the bridge like a J5 or something. Not too sure about the amp, but probably something mid-gain with a separate overdrive pedal (TS-9 perhaps) for when you want to switch to heavier stuff.

I also support the MIM strat HSS config....go figure

and most of the amps mentioned so far.

i know it seems like a long shot sometimes on used gear but you can honestly get a lot for your money going that route. Just because it is listed on craigslist or ebay or other doesn't mean it is no good. Often times, the best gear can be found this way and most sellers are trading UP to something else as they develope. Listen closely to the advice so far.

New, there are a few choices that can probably do most of what you want to do, but they are what they are for the price. Valvekings, Crate Vs, Vypyrs, B52's and the like. Just keep your options open.
