Okay, so I have a crap graphics card.

I have no idea about graphics cards, and want to know what's the best but cheapest one I can get that's good?

And by good, I mean I want to play motherfuckin' Portal! At the moment it's all horrible and slow.

Any help guys?

Those are disappearing. The 9800gtx has the same price tag as the one the 8800gt had a couple of months ago.

Did a quick newegg search; your graphics card is onboard I believe. Which means that your motherboard SHOULD have a PCI Express x16 slot. Grab yourself a geForce 8800GT (around 130 USD now) and call it a day.

For a relatively non-nerdy person, I fell like one hell of a nerd for being a computer geek.

Wow, that's pretty clever. You got any more info on it? The website you gave me doesn't say anything about it, and I tried Google and made no sense of what it told me.

Ati 4850, or a similarly priced Nvidia will do you well. The 4850 runs on par with powerful cards:

Make sure to get the latest drivers off their website after installing the thing.
