dont try to mimic someones strum patterns too much, its not that important for most songs. just feel it

A lot of times its good to just keep playing it until it sounds about the same. Get timing first, try even doing all down strums. A lot of times you will notice when they change things like down up. Then you can find out if sometimes they are doing UUU or something too just by tone. It takes a little getting used to especially on songs where they only strum part of the chord but you pick things up. A lot of time bands dont even always use the exact same strumming pattern. Sometimes they will use a DDU or a DUD. Overall if you know the chords and know some of the pattern it will sound relatively right, after that just fine tune it.
