But what is the black wire at the back of my strat for? It has come apart from that little round piece of metal.

its a ground wire.

it's soldered to the metal plate to bround the bridge and prevent a humming noise.

$15 soldering iron from radio shack, heat up the iron and follow directions on the package.

It acts as a ground for the electronics i think. It should be soldered back in place.

Solder it back to the 'round piece of metal' or you will get grounding problem. Noises etc...
