sorry man, I swear you didnt have your genre there before

anyways - rock/metal, try looking at ESP's (common I know), or the new Prophecy Series Les Paul/SG are very nice and will easily do rock/metal. If you are looking for something a little less common so to speak, try looking at Washburn or Carvin, they have some really nice gear.

Those new American Strats they came out with this year are great, and right around that price range.

Well a lot of it depends on what kinda neck/pickups you prefer.
Also, if you want active pickups, get a schecter, LTD, or some kinda Jackson with EMGs.
If you want passive pickups, i'd recommend a jackson with SD pickups, a schecter with SDs, or a prestige ibanez (maybe used?).
Also, do you want a floating trem or string-through/stopbar?

schecters are good, so are ltd's. I love my hellraiser. You might want to check out the Michael Kelly Patriot Premium. Beautiful Guitar and great components.
