when i hit an open high e, the note dies within a half a second. but it isn't fret buzz. it only happens when i hit it open. whats wrong?

Take the string off and see if there's anything in the slot muting the string.

I put the back of a scalpel blade in it (the blunt side) and just carved it slightly since my SG's nutslot killed tonnes of sustain on the high E. Don't use the sharp side since yu may make the slot worse off, and I think the back of a blade is about the right width anyway..
Ofcourse the best thing to do would be to get a custom nut made by a pro
