Do the sexes appreciate music differently? (Warning: mass generalisations predicted).

#1
So, do you think the sexes listen to music in different ways?

The traditional view is that men tend to listen to music in a much more technical way, whereas women listen for emotional reasons. I'm not sure about this, at all, but I bet if you play the same song to a group of men and to a group of women, you'd get very different responses.

Thoughts?

Yes, normally the girls just want to F%*#( the famous guy who is playing guitar / singing. Guys tend to just like the music and want to be able to play like said person.

The rest just do it because they want to try to fit in with said group of friends etc.
#3
I believe that females do not have the mental capacity to decide whether or not they like music, they just take whatever males say and recycle it.

I have yet to meet a female that doesn't just listen to MTV/radio or "whatever is on".

that sounds ****ing stupid to me.. you cant just generalise all women and all men.. i think you would get a lot of different responses if you played a peice of music to purely a group of men, just because there men, doesnt mean there going to like music the sam way.

Eurgh I know girls like that, but they're only a few - and it's not "normal" for loads of girls to do that

I listen to music for loads of different reasons - if I'm learning how to play a song, if I love the song (just generally) or because I want to chill out etc
#9
I think most guys do that as well; I think it's just those that pick up an instrument think really deeply about the music.

I'm asking for them? No, I just wondered whether people believe that men and women appreciate music differently, that's different than saying, 'Everyone, can you make sexist statements?' is it not?

It's only different because "sexist" would have negative implications. Asking how any large groups of people feel about something is guaranteed to produce mass generalizations. Sorry to burst your bubble about being clever with the whole prediction thing.

Well..I think it depends what people are going through..someone going through a difficult things in life might be more violent, and more inclined towards violent music. A happy girl that loves to dance will listen more to techno or poppy stuff..

to sum it up, people like music they can relate to in some way.

I'm sure in any generalization there are some truths, but to me what really determines whether a person likes the technical parts of music is in fact if they are a musician or not.

I'm a girl and I never really cared that much about music until I started to play guitar. I'm not one of those 'strum an acoustic guitar just 'cause I want to break the mold' feminists either. For the amount of time I've been playing, I'm pretty good. I like Metal, Blues, and classical guitar basically because those are musicians who care about the technical parts of the music. Not because I care about the lyrics. (It'll depend on who you are talking about with the f***ing part.) I want to play as good as them.

Make whatever generalizations you want, but it won't make a difference in anyway to me. I am going to further as musician and try my best to make it to the top.

I don't really listen for the emotional side... More like if its got a good beat/guitar/violins and thats it... I don't notice the emotional side unless I sit there and concentrate (which I don't do regularly)

My brother however, listens to the emotional side of music... The same song contains several different meanings to us

EDIT> Why is it the assumption that Females only listen to the emotional side?

Well this girl I just hung out with is really into Pink Floyd, as am I. However, she picks up more on the lyrics than I do. For example when I listen to Dark Side of the Moon, I like to just lay there and let the music fill my head, but she pays more attention to the actual message of the song. Whereas, I have to concentrate more if I want to get a message out of it.
#33
No I listen with an emphasis on the emotional side, and I'm a guy. And I'm automatically very focused on lyrics. Of course, I do love some technical stuff too, and some stuff which is just catchy, but generally I take meaning out of music.
I play by my own rules. And I have one rule; There are no rules... but if there are, they're there to be broken. Even this one.

I listen to music for emotion, statements and musicality. My sister listens because she likes catchy tunes.

My ex boy listens for the same reasons as I do, my ex girl listens so she can put fishnets and eyeliner on, and think that she's connecting with it.
