I'm teaching my dad's friend's son how to play guitar. His first lesson was chords, he quickly memorized them, but had a hard time pressing the strings, and he often cursed that his fingers are muffling the notes. Then he told me he wanted to learn one easy song. So I looked thru the songs in my PSP, found Fake Tales of San Fransisco by the Arctic Monkeys, the first song I learned.

I taught him the main riff, but he said it was too hard, so I taught him the easy rhytm part. He's still struggling with it.

Guys, I need more really really easy guitar songs for this poor noob.

Sorry to put another guitarist out there that only does this, but:
Smoke on the Water

Good for some instant gratification.
Other songs:

Walk Don't Run - The Ventures (Main riff)
Tears in Heaven - Clapton

A lot of songs by Santana would work(parts of them anyway):
Samba Pa Ti
Europa

Or give him loads of scales and some tips on improv to build up his finger strength.

Ummm..... the first song I was able to play all the way through is Patience by Guns N Roses. Also Knockin on Heavens Doors is pretty easy too.

For electric.... Breaking the Law by Judas Priest is pretty freakin easy.... or Fortunate Son by CCR.

Have a search for the music of "Step it up Blues".
I can play it with my nostrils.

i didn't even learn them they're so easy, i was born with the knowledge. a poor african he has never even heard a guitar could play No Boundaries

ask him what music he likes or even bands.
then find something easy.
If it likes it he'll work on it more at home because he wants to hear himself play something he loves so much.

Do that to keep him interested, and still work on chords as well.
Also work on picking.
Its tuff it get it right at first but as long as he keeps up with it he'll find the sweet spots and how much pressure to apply, ect.

Also be sure to go into very very good detail, something you might take for granted he may be struggling with.

Yeah, fermented offal discharge is so simple and slow, too easy. Dance of eternity? do these guys even know how to get out of 4/4 time?

But seriously, like someone said, electric funeral, holy diver is pretty easy as well, and would be good practice.

+1. Definitely a great first song to learn. Might actually be too easy for this kid.Bottom line is this song is easy but still sounds advanced, relatively speaking.

You need to teach him how to whammy without a whammy bar, the 12th fret on the low e-string is a good one to practice on

really dude? i've can get the verse, chorus, and bridge down, but i still have some trouble with the rest of the song..but compared to other coheed songs, i'd say that the crowing is somewhat harder than for example, blood red summer..and to reply to the thread, i'd say teach him round here by the counting crows, it's four chords the whole song
