But I still want the ability to play a little metal. I want a warmer rich tone (mahogany guitars are best). I have up to a $3000 budget but $1500 or so is ideal. I'd like something in a Les Paul style but if its not, its still ok. What kind of pickups and amp should I get for this?

get a marshall jcm 900 amp and a les paul

but remember, the tones are mostly in the bones
Some of my gear:
Epi Les Paul Custom
Fender American Special Tele
Gibson ES-339
London City Strat copy
Other Strat copy
Taylor Big Baby (acoustic)
Ibanez SGT 130 (acoustic)

Trace 2x 12" guitar amp
Dime Distortion

Guitar - any les paul you desire
Pickups - Seymour Duncan Alnico Pro II's
Amplifier - Silver Jubillee/Slash Signature Marshalls

but heres a secret....Orange Rockerverb, they are more marshall sounding than marshall at the moment. Also if you decide to be yourself and experiment with your tone this will be amazing.

Epiphone Les Paul Standard w/ SD Alnico Pro II's
Fender Aerodyne Telecaster & Stratocaster
Marshall JCM 800 4104 combo

I couldn't find anything called a JCM 900, but I found a few JCM 800s.

And damn... $1500+ on an amp? Wasn't expecting that much... Thanks.

JCM 900's are nice, 800's are great too. I'd try to get a JCM 800 2204 model, 50 watt versions are like $800 or so for the head in good condition. I see them on Fleabay and Craigslist all the time.

Slash himself attributes his tone to Alnico II pickups. They don't have to be duncans, but they have to be alnico II.

Les paul + Alnico II + marshall = Slash

His tone is not that complicated at all.

Just start doing so many drugs that taking off your sunglasses would blind you, and put on a top hat IMMEDIATELY and never take it off, not even during sex.

Oh, and play a Gibson LP through an amp.

'Nuff said.
You know, you're probably reading this saying "Hey, I'm bored, maybe this'll be funny?"
It's not. Too bad. No, I am not refunding you those 6 seconds of your life. So :P

you should be able to get a jcm800 or 900 head for around 700. in fact thats how much we paid for when we were buying amps for the band studio

Just get a JCM800 or an Orange Rocker, with any guitar with Alnico II pickups.

Stupidly easy to get his tone.

slash actually puts his hotter pickup in the neck position, that's a big key to his warm tone, however, both his pickups are alnico ii's and are extremely low output

I remember this one time - Jesus played Eruption on a lute with strings made from the hair of 23 virgins.

It was pretty hardcore.
