Major is one of the following;
Warner Music Group
EMI
Sony Music
BMG Music
Universal Music Group
Polygram

And indie = independent (not a music genre)

Just those four these days because of a bunch of mergers and buyouts.
Think of it as a family tree. Those four are each considered labels in their own right, then they own a bunch of other labels who in turn might own labels themselves. Every label that is in that chain cannot be considered an indie label because they are not independent of the 'big four'.

Some indie labels will have distribution contracts with the majors or bands on the indie roster might have published their songs with them but that doesn't necessarily make a label part of the tree.

It gets complicated.

Why do we feel it's necessary to yak about bullsh*t in order to be comfortable?

That's when you know you found somebody special. When you can just shut the f*ck up for a minute, and comfortably share silence.

Why does it matter? You're not cool because you listen to "indie."

I agree to disagree. IMO some indie songs are better than those produced by major label companies. The difference actually is that these indie musicians are less popular because they have not much financial support unlike those with major label companies that gets a lot of publicity and promotion.
