I think the reason why professional sports are so heavily watched and have such incredibly devoted fans is because it doesn't affect anything important, and so if the team loses it's a disappointment with no consequences. A person has the security of being able to have irrational and overexaggerated love for a team because it doesn't matter if they don't win. As life becomes more and more complex and tough to handle, people have something silly to get worked up about instead to get their minds away. We slowly have less and less security of that sort, or less time to just kick back and not worry about anything.

Have you never heard of gambling problems, plenty of people get into a lot of shit because of a team lossing, but on that note, the majority of people don't. I watch it as an escape, I could be having the shittiest day ever, put on some UFC, and I get pumped and dont think about my problems

The sports team from my area is superior to the sports team from your area!

Do we not see how this leads to nationalism?

Does anyone understand how dangerous nationalism is?

It's a hypothesis, not a theory.

And sports are boring to watch. Watching sports is like watching someone wank. It's much more fun to do it yourself.

Picky about terminology. Nerd.

Playing > watching. However some people aren't very good or just admire someone who is much better. You would probably watch someone wank if their technique was astounding and admirable.

Totally disagree. I know tons of people who are emotionally attached to their team...and if their team loses they get depressed, angry, etc.

I suppose that I agree, as for some people, a loss for their team is an enormous thing (When Federer lost the Wimbledon final this year, I was crushed for weeks). There is also the fact that many people get the strange sense of personal achievement, when a bunch of men in shorts are doing the bulk of the work. If your sports team wins, you feel part of a community, and you seem to think that you can be a part of what is essentially, their triumph.

Although the outcome really does not matter for the fan, I agree, they get worked up over nothing.

I've just realised that I haven't really made a point...... Ah well

I remember when Busch Stadium was torn down and rebuilt in St. Louis. I thought it was really sad because there are loads of places in St. Louis that are filled with poverty, and it would have been nice if that money had been used for something more important. But oh well.
