So, I'm really confused what to do.

Nuclear No. of No. of No. of	Atomic Mass Charge/
Symbol	Protons	Neutrons Electrons Number Number	Valence
a. 126C 0
b. 5 6
c. 13 12
d. 4 9

Basically, I've been given this table, and am supposed to fill it in. Problem is, I have absolutely no idea how to do so. Any thoughts? I'm not asking you to do my homework, but more like explain how to do it. None of my friends are answering their phones, and so, in desperation, I come to the pit for answers.

Thanks

Nuclear Symbol - ex: 126C....I'm assuming that the 12 should be superscript, the 6 supscript. In this sense, the 12 is the mass number, the 6 is the Atomic Number.

No. of Protons. - is equal to the atomic number

No of Nuetrons = Mass number - Atomic number (for Carbon 12 it would be 6)

No of Electrons - is equal to the number of protons in a neutral atom. If it is a positively charged atom then #protons - magnitude of charge = number of elecrtons.
for a negatively charged atom, #protons + magnitude of charge = number of electrons

Atomic number - the number of protons

Mass Number - number of protons + number of Nuetrons

Charge/Valence - see what I wrote for No of electrons...that should help

Thanks a bunch. It still didn't come out exactly right, but I think it makes more sense now.

"126C", does that represent Carbon-126, as in the isotope? If so, here is what you do:
The number of protons is equal to the number of electrons, and equal to the atomic number.
Mass number is atomic mass rounded.
You can find the symbol by looking up the atomic number (always) or atomic mass (mostly) on a periodic table.
You can find neutrons by subtracting the atomic number from mass number.
Can't help you much with charges except to look them up on a periodic table.

It's still not quite right, but you need to start by taking the ones that have # of protons or # of electrons, which should be the same. That's your atomic number. Look at a periodic table that has a big example with all the numbers labelled, find the atomic number. That'll tell you what element it is. From there, subtract the atomic number from the mass number, which gives you # of neutrons.

Also, it looks like the bottom one has a valence of 9, which makes no sense? If you still need more help you'll have to fix the table up a bit. Try making an image and attaching it.

EDIT: that came out really late, and also, 126C is NOT an isotope of carbon. The first guy had it right. Mass # is 12, atomic # is 6, symbol is C

don't worry, I think it made enought sense to me to get you a description...

Yeah, that first guy kinda edited his post after I posted my explanation.
