Hi everyone! I am taking this class at my High School, it is called EDD - Engineering Design and Development. For this class we need to come up with some kind of a project that in the end of a school it will be or will not be approved.

Well my idea was to build a guitar with adjustable pickups. my teacher does not want me to go with that idea; may be because he does not understand anything in music, or may be he is right. He asked me to collect some kind of data that will prove that my project is justifiable and will find use in musical industry!

If anybody knows anything about my idea or wants me to explain it in more details please ask me to. And if you think that my idea might work please aprove it on the forum or here.

Thank you for taking your time in reading my letter. I am seeing to contact with you any time!

Are you talking about something like this?

The Ibanez 2663 SL has a slide-able pickup.

Gibson came out with a guitar of the month that had 2 swappable sets of pickups.

Normal pickups are adjustable as well. You just change the distance from from the string.

I dunno if pickups need more controls, than what can be put in the 2-4 pots guitars usually have.

I would try an onboard expression button/pedal.... spring loaded so it rests at 0, and is close enough to the strings to be useable... making it a octave pedal or something similar.

Depending you what you mean by ajustable it may be useful

isn't the point of EDD to invent or innovate something?

my friend made a ladle with a trigger that turned it into a strainer, he got a patent. The other person in his class made a ping pong table net reinforce so the net doesn't move if you knock the poles, he also got a patent.

Do something simple, useful, and random. Don't do a guitar just cause you like guitars.

That writing gives me a headache.............

Also, building that guitar would probavly cost a FORTUNE

What would be the point, though? I think you achieve the same with 3 humbuckers with individual tone controls.

Gibson, Ovation and Armstrong have all made guitars with adjustable pickups.

I would suggest you invent some sort of death ray

You've already just done this, maybe a week ago, haven't you?

Either that, or it's a really popular idea. But, it's already been made, so yeah, you can't really do it.

But a huge loss of sustain and tone due to 3 giant magnets :P

I've seen a guitar before with a humbucker on like a rail so you could slide the pickup towards the neck or the beidge position. Can't remember the make thought, could've been a custom job.
If I manage to find a pic, I'll post it.

Delboy

Well, the Ibanez I posted has a system like that.

I don't think so. If the pickups are effecting sustain, they are too close to the string.
