So I got a letter from the army saying that I have to come to an appointment with them where they will check my body, run some tests etc. to see if I'm eligible for the army. This is common in Germany seeing as we have a required conscription (or draft as you yankees call it). To those of you who live in countries where it is mandatory to provide services (in form of army or social services) to the state, did they find you eligible or not, and for what reasons? I hope they wont find me useful enough seeing as I have hay fever and I'm too skinny for my height, but they're probably desperate enough to even take me. Is there any luck that I might not have to serve? Cause I really don't want to. If I have to, I'll probably go to the military rather than do social service though.

Cheers,
Chris

lulz.

I live in Austria, and while I don't have to do military service as I don't have an Austrian passport, a few of my friends do. I doubt you being skinny is a legitimate reason, they'll work you just as hard and yell at you more when you can't cope as well as fit people. However, if you manage to have an attack of hay fever in front of them I doubt very much you will be selected. Just try and play up every small physical problem you have.

a Draft in my opinion is considered involuntary servitude, not everyone wants to join the military and god forbid, risk their lives for something they never wanted to do in the first place.

i know in Greece there are ways to get out of it, you have to sign off on some papers and pay a fee or something like that. look it up, maybe it's the same in Germany too.

also....why the need for the word "yank"? can't the European elitism end sometime soon?

oh shut up you whiny septic, you call yourselves yankees and they call you that in South America, Yanques,

national service in a time of piece isn't really a bad thing is it, encouraging discipline in youth as well as improving health
look at Cuba they have 2 year compulsory service after school (unless you are studying to be a doctor) and they are a very athletic nation

they also do this in Scandinavia and they are pretty much always neutral so it doesn't do much harm

I'm not scared that I'll end up fighting in a war, it's more that I don't want to waste an entire year which I could spend going to Uni. I mean...here in Bavaria we already have 13 years of school....(now switching to twelve for lower grades) so we already loose a year compared to other countries. And then a lot of us go to the army/social services...thats another year gone which people from other countries don't loose.

In Austria you can ask to postpone your year of military or civil service if you're going on to further education, if you don't mind taking a year out after college to join the military then you could try asking if you can postpone it until you've done your degree. Indeed, once you've done that and you've left the country they'll probably just let it slide. The army doesn't want conscription so they probably won't push it upon you.

Pretty much any first-world country will either offer you courses while you're serving, or will allow you to postpone serving while you attend a university, so suck it up and go take your test.

to clear things up, I didn't mean the "yank" word in a negative fashion. Is it something that Americans don't like being called? And I think if someone called me a Nazi it'd be worse than me calling an American a yankee (that is if it's something negative). I think it sounds cool.

Btw, you wouldn't believe the shit I get on XBL when people see that I'm German xD. They start saying things like "Sieg Heil" or singing the forbidden first to verses of our national anthem xD.
