I want to do something regarding electric guitars for my science project, but I can't think of anything. I was hoping you guys could give me some suggestions (I know, it's the Pit). I'm in high school, so it can't be something like "how does a pickup work." The whole idea of the project is that an investigation must take place.

So, Pit, any ideas?

Is it true that a low bass note can make a woman orgasm if she sits on a 4x12 cab?

Good idea, actually...
Maybe I'll do it.

On a serious note - Sorry Saphrax!!
Maybe you could do about the frequency of the notes and whether there is a relation between the octaves and the frequency, or also whether distortion changes the shape of the wave of the note?
Another suggestion; Is it possible to produce a note high enough to shatter glass/crystal?
Yet another; Is there a relationship between Wattage of amp and Decibels of volume?

Very physics based i know...
Hope it helped!

Damnit - didn't see Lewis_Greys' answer - apparently i'm just elaborating

You could do something based around sound waves, harmonies, resonance etc.

I was thinking something involving the range of notes, but couldn't come up with anything. Those ideas could help, though.

Thanks, that did help. I was going to look into breaking glass, so it's nice to know that that idea isn't ridiculous. All the other ideas are great, too. And the more physics based, the better, because I'm in Honors Physics, so my project has to do with physics. Thanks again.

It's been discussed many times on here, and I've never seen proof either way...

I don' think that the teachers would be too impressed though. I like your ideas though.

And yes, distortion does change the shape of a wave.

@ Saphrax - I think that it is a good idea all the same - you need some girls who're willing to do it, an octave pedal, and a bass or double bass with respective amps...call brainiac, mythbusters or similar?

Thanks for the link BTW, i mean i thought it was clipping but a really interesting way to show it!

Good point - if the school doesn't have an oscilloscope my plan is foiled...

Sorry, guys, I should have mentioned that I have to be able to mathematically measure my experiment.

For my schools science fair I did if the thickness/type of pick effects the tuning of the guitar or if it changes how the tuner reads the sound...it did very slightly...i wus gunna do if the thickness of strings or type of string has a more smooth of constant sound
MIM Tele
Fender Blues Jr NOS
Schecter Omen 6
Squier Strat
Greg Bennett Acoustic
other crap...
