I know they're have been a lot of minuscule threads on the current recession within America, but now it has really gotten out of control.

This morning, one of the newspapers stated that France's stock-market fell at 19%. (Keep in mind that the US market fell only like 10% at one given point). Spain's market fell somewhere around 13%. I want to say that the United Kingdom was somewhere around like 8%. Today, the US dipped again at 500 or so points.

But here is the kicker. Russia, the former super power of the world, fell 48% PERCENT!. Half there market is gone. That is incredible!

What if the west is loosing it's grip on the world and is now starting to fall. India and China are up on the rise. (All though, China's market took a tumble recently as well.)

Maybe the shift of powers has begun.

Just something to ponder. Discuss, criticize, blame, etc.

The powershift have been going on for some time now, but this is a big dip for the western economies. In 50 years or so, we (as in central europe, USA, blablablacapitalistcontries) will probably be what Thailand is today. Fall of an empire? Maybe so.

Where did you get these figures? From what I heard Russia dropped 19%, and I know France wasn't as extreme or I would've remembered it.

Yeah, America is boned.

The really dumb part is that we didn't see it coming. Almost every economic crisis we've ever had has been a result of bad loans used for speculation on something.

We're feeling it hard in Canada too. It's looming right over us...and we are suffering too.

Honestly, and don't flame me for being a tree-hugger or jumping on the bandwagon, but governments everywhere need to go green. Much greener than now.

I've grown up in a green-oriented family, my dad started a business in the late 80's that is still running today that does organic lawn care. So I know the benefits of it all.

Oh yeah, if you're in Canada and value both the economy and the environment, AND you can vote, don't listen to Stephen Harper's bullshit. He's a menace and and ignorant ****. Do not vote conservative next week!
Oh no he just divided by zero again...*gets sucked into vortex*

Good thing my bomb shelter is up-to-date.
The arena is empty except for one man,
Still driving and striving as fast as he can.
The sun has gone down and the moon has come up,
And long ago somebody left with the cup,
But he's driving and striving and hugging the turns...

yes and they were a superpower when they didnt use this disgusting and wrong economic system

how can a market actually distribute resources accordingly without any direction, Adam Smith would be disgusted if he saw what the markets have done

ironic that the west always says socialism failed well it seems to me that capitalism has failed and must use socialist means (such as nationalisation) to save it's sorry arse

I know you are in Canada, but:

Honestly, after watching the debates. Both candidates seem to be feeding off each others policies. Quite frankly, I really do believe that either candidate will do good or they will do bad. However, Obama has nothing to loose, if he screws up, it was all George Bush's fault. Should he do great, it was entirely his doing and he deserves all the credit.

But it's interesting to see how much fan base Obama has. He really does appeal entirely to the younger people. Which in my opinion, isn't really right. Because many seniors in my school who are eligible to vote, are in the polls not to vote on issues, but to vote on the novelty of Obama.

This may seem off topic to my original post, but at this point in my life: any political, economic, or otherwise social science is so interrelated that it is important to be fluent in both.
