I've always wanted to learn drums, but I've never actually started. How can I get started besides getting a teacher?I know the best way is to get a teacher, but I'm in college and around here,it's really hard to find a teacher. And I'm kinda broke too anyway . What drum websites are there that is similar to UG?Also, what Youtube links should I check out? Thanks!

Listen to a lot of Dream Theater, Necrophagist, Frank Zappa, and Mars Volta.

Then contemplate to an excruciating level all the rhythms you heard.

Practice tapping them out, imaging the pulses through your body if you were to experience playing those parts.

Buy a drum set. Practice the hell out of it.

Get a pad and some sticks and learn the rudiments, check out www.vicfirth.com this will get you started.

while this is a good starting point, I reccomend actually using a kick and snare, to learn rudiments, at leat if you play rock/metal since the kick drum is used a whole lot and takes quite a bit of getting used to. once you got that add the high hat, ten the cymbals then the toms.

I wouldn't recommend it, but I taught myself drums by the Dave Grohl method, that is by banging on stuff on my desk.

Tap the desk once.

Tap it again.

Tap it again.

Congratulations, you're now an accomplished drummer.

If you understand guitar tabs, this shouldn't be hard.

Hat---: -x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x
Kick---:-x--------x--------
Snare:-------x-------x---

and then you're playing drums.

It seems it worked really well for him

To TS, buy a simple drum kit and learn to coordinate first, and learn some basic stuff. Then, build up.

There's a drumset at my school which I have practiced on a few times. I just do simple beats and come up with just as simple fills. Messing around, I guess, trying to get used to the whole thing until I get my own set .

Play rockband drums til you can play on expert then get yourself a real set and try to play along with songs.

you are assuming he's already got rockband right? otherwise that'd be a stupid idea.

I got crap to do, okay? Counter-Strike isn't going to play itself.

Practice hitting 4th notes on a snare, whole notes on a kick, and 16th notes on a hat. Change which drums you hit, learn rudiments like drum roll, etc. My brother's a drummer, so I would sorta know what I'm talking about.

learn to keep count and get a freakin metronome.

if your a drummer that cant keep time, your worth nothing..

start out with some AC/DC. all their drum beats are amazingly easy...when you get them going pretty well, move onto some harder stuff..
