My friend has and epiphone black beauty. he has the 3 standard pickups on it it and he wants to change them..
he asked me if he could have 3 emg pickups .
i thought it wouldnt work or would be harder to do then two.. arent they wired up differantly??
if 3 emgs could work wat would be the best combination ??
he plays mainly blues and hard rock i recommended seymour duncans to him but he prefers the emgs..
i hope this makes sense

It would work, i can't provide you with wiring diagrams, but it would work.

Can't imagine it beeing worth it tho. He really should go with passive duncans, EMGs are much more for metal, and i find passive provides a far nicer blues tone.
#3
EMGs are great for distortion...
Thats about it.
It's because they have such high output and therefore distortion better by driving tube amps harder.

He'd be better off with a Seymour Duncan JB in the Bridge and a '59/Jazz in the neck and probably the middle too, Im actually not sure about the middle pickup.

But if you cant pull him his EMGs then Id probably say:
Bridge - 81, the perfect lead pickup, always used in the bridge and occasionally found in the neck.
Middle - 85, the most common companion of the 81, used in the neck mainly, some companies that dont specialise in guitars with EMG pickups sometimes put a pair of 85s on.
Neck - 60, Primarily used as a rhythm pickup, Ive never seen one used anywhere other than the neck, featured on ESPs eclipse models (Les paul shape)

The latter pickup combination should offer a good variety of distorted tones.

Tell your friend to do some research on both setups
And to start saving! EMGs are around $180 aud EACH, plus labour for a technican to install and wire them up properly.

Would be kinda overkill, and EMGs are big pups so 3 might not fit into the same space as 3 passives, meaning you would have to route out space, and thats not really a good idea.

Poppycock.

They're not that much taller and the length and width are standard, they'll fit just fine

Hahah +1 for the correct reply and +3792874 for the use of Poppycock.

I'd have to agree that 3 EMG's would be overkill for one who primarily play's blues and rock. And I would also agree that a JB in the Bridge and '59 for the Neck would be much more suited to him. (can't think of another good SD suggestion for the middle)

However.. if you can't get him away from the triple EMG desire.. I'd say
Bridge: '81
Middle: '60
Neck: '85
#7
Could always go with some tappable EMGs.

81TW bridge
89R middle
89 neck

Since its an LP you can have a push/pull for each pickup, and perhaps a push/pull on/off for the middle pickup.

That'd give you a WHOLE lot of options.

i know they say the difference between 18v and 27v is minimal, but wouldn't a situation like this call for it?

In this kind of situation, you'd be better off running the batteries in parallel, to make sure that enough current is available to each pickup.
#13
I'd try an 81 in the bridge an 85 in the middle and a 60 in the neck and see how it sounds then I would move the 85 to the neck and put the 60 in the middle and see if it sounds any better. If it didn't sound better I'd change them back. With the EMG quick connects that would be easy to do. The 18v mod would be a must for anyone that plays blues cause the pickups sound more open and have better cleans. It would be a waste of time to go to 27v cause it really doesn't change the sound any. It would also be possible to use coil tappable EMG pickups like the 81TW and 89 models. That would give you even more sound options.

I know EMG's are known as METAL pickups but some EMG's sound good on the clean channel. I can get real good clean tones from my 85. It sounds as good if not better than my Seymour Duncan Jazz model in my other guitar. I've heard the 60's sound pretty good clean, too. The 81 sounds crappy on the clean channel though, but the others are alright.
#14
EMG in the bridge maybe? And then take these guy's suggestions for the other 2 so you can have a more bluesier tone, so those seymour duncans that everyone is mentioning.

Thats about all I can think of, if your friend is so keen on putting EMGs in it.
#15
the output of the magnets are so weak that it will be better for sustain not to mention the extra sustain boost of the preamp in the emg's. what a waste though... i'd stay stock or buy some duncans. maybe like 81/81/60 or 85/81/60 or something.

Ok, back on topic, 3 emg pickups = $350 approximately, including tech work. For that kind of money, you could sell the black beauty on eBay for approximately $400 ( some are selling for as much as $520 used ), and take your $750-$870 and put it all towards a considerably 'better' ( in quotes as per the subjective nature of the suggestion ) guitar that's already loaded with EMG's, like a kickin' ESP or whatever. That way, you get a 'better' guitar AND EMG's in one fell swoop. If you went for a used EPS Eclipse 1000, which is a very nice Les Paul style guitar loaded with EMG's, you'd even have money left over! Like $100-$250! Think about it: better guitar, EMG's, AND extra money. What's to lose?

If you're not into logic/reason/saving money, do the EMG's w/ 18v mod.

i disagree, if you turn the volume down on the guitar you can get some really nice clean tones because of the accentuated harmonics. And i thought that for blues you wanted pickups that drive tube amps hard? I know everyone says that emgs are just metal pickups but I think that high output passive pickups tend to have quite harsh treble and are actually not as good for cleans as emgs so if you want a lot power from a pickup then EMGs are very good.

well he is obviously a young player if he wants the emg for hard rock and blues.the thing is that most of emg humbuckers are made for metal only.they are the least versatile pickups i heard.you will help him by making him put some passive pickups...maybe seymour duncan.

Ever heard of a Chapman stick? They're like 10 stringed bass guitars used for two handed tapping stuff and have really wide necks like that, although not quite as extreme as the 16 string lol
