Ok, my band are need of gigs. We have a few private parties, school assemblies and buskers nights coming up but we need actual gigs if you get me. We have a gig next week but we are wanting a lot more.

So I ask:
1. Where should i look?
2. Approaching Other Bands, Is it a good idea?
3. Should i look outside of my area?
4. If anyone is near Sunderland/Durham, any good local places i can approach?

Thanks In Advance,

I think if your band can get together a decent 3 song demo, you can shop those around to venues. Also, getting to know other bands and networking with them is a great idea! Im in Chicago and the music scene here is great, you can walk into a bar and give them a demo and some will take time to listen to it and then put you in their calendar. Start local first before you go out of town... this way you can get used to the crowd and setting up your gear with no pressure. Good luck bro

A Demo CD is key!

1. Ask any music venue, pubs that have music nights, anything like that. Also, try and get yourself a promoter, this helps if he/she is a friend of the band who doesn't take your money

2. YES! It's the easiest way to get gigs and a reputation, even if you only get a 10 minute opening slot, it's better than nothing.

3. If you don't mind travelling to do gigs, then go anywhere that'll let you play

4. Sorry, I can't help you with this one. I'm in Manchester, so I guess I have it easy...there's a music venure everywhere you look near me XD

check out bars, pubs. etc. and check out local colleges or universitys, they usually have a thriving musical scene.

What we did was offer a few pubs a free gig, if they like it they pay the next..... once you have even one free gig go to the next pub / place and say im playing at so and so on this night do you have any vacancies for a band to play etc etc

Best thing to do is keep calling pubs, clubs etc all around your area
obviously depending on your age you might struggle getting gigs at pubs etc also alot of places want equipment pak tested and want union cards etc just try them. Try your local guitar shop etc they usually know places. For starting out dont ask for too much either £100-£120 or just enough to cover expenses or my personal fav free tab

Good luck

I know this seems like a minor thing, but make sure your myspace has your best work on it. Poduction companies need to make money, and they shop around all by themselves, often on myspace. Just make sure to give them the best stuff.

That'll take care of the passive stuff, but like others have said, you need to actively solicit venues with a good demo CD. Put it right into the manager/owner's hands, and talk with them.

If you are having trouble getting a following, then try to keep on playing week in week out at an open mic night, to the point where it seems that you are a regular fixture. Start saving money, and as a band chip in and record a demo, as good quality as possible, and then send it out to local music venues.

Definitely, see if you can get gigs through other bands. Bands that have a few gigs more than you under the belt, would see it as a major plus for them to have a support act, and that means extra stage time for you. Just be sure to blow the band you are supporting off the stage.

Look into organising your own gigs. ie renting the venue yourselves etc, sometimes that is good when there are no slots availible anytime soon. The more gigs you play the more gigs you will get, so dont lose faith if you find it difficult at the start...

Durham ehh?
Ask around the clubs!

Just ask around the pubs and clubs. I know a few people who's band just play at pubs and clubs. There's a "rock night" near where I live and my cousin's band had a pretty much regular slot for a while. It would probably be worth looking outside of your area if you're having trouble around where you live.

I would say for sure bother your friends in other bands to the point of annoyance, and play in every street festival, party, whatever you can, because getting your band out there is the best way to get gigs.

well around here you add other local bands and some companies etc on myspace then they ask you to play shows etc

Schools, Clubs, Pubs, etc. all these things support having concerts. Use schools also to advertise concerts.

Getting to know other bands works, send them e-mail, try to plan concerts with 2-4 bands.

Make Demos! helps a lot more then coming and asking, "hey can we play here on saturday?" and then don't have a sample of your music.

Get friends to spread word about the band, spread Demo-CDs, get your band known to the town / city, well you get my point.
