So I've been shopping around for a really cheap piano to learn on. I found one the other day where all of the pedals work, all the keys work, but it's just very out of tune. I'm going to get it tuned if I buy it, but the exterior of the piano is pretty shitty. I wanted to refurbish it to a degree. I'm worried that if I sand out some of the scratches and nicks and then when I re-finish it that it might affect the sound. Does anyone know if it's alright to clean it up a bit or if sanding it down and refinishing it will ruin the sound?

Thanks!
