I have this assignment for school where I have to pick a song and do a project about it. There can't be any swears, and you have to show the song in front of the class so I'd prefer if it wasn't 10 minutes long. The lyrics must be deep and meaningful, and preferably it should be easy to write about and understand what the song is about. Any suggestions?

I'd say to put this in THIS http://ultimate-guitar.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=7 thread, but it's more of a recommendation than writing lyrics discussion.

Hmm...

Death - Misanthrope

From above and around,
observations are collected
Knowledge is taken in by curious life forms
That may bring hope from beyond
Beneath the giver of life, our sun
An examination of another kind is done

A view from those who stood high
And breathing the sky
An opinion from below and from above

Some were decided, some were not
A few looked away, but none forgot

[Chorus:]
Misanthrope
Hater of all mankind
There is some hope
For those who own their mind
They came, they saw and acknowledged
Some good, some bad
Opinion: Dangerous

[Solo: Schuldiner]

Stay where you are, don't get consumed
By what they created from sheer neglet
In denial of years and years of
shattered souls
That were lost to the power of
Fragile, frightful minds

A view from those who stood high
And breathing the sky
An opinion from below and from above

Some were decided, some were not
A few looked away, but none forgot

You really want to use a metal song when the point is to have deep and meaningful lyrics which are easily displayed to a class?

EDIT: 'easily displayed to a class' is the important part here, all metal is amazingly deep and meaningful and keeps me awake at night

i write in my diary,
your face is like a rose,
your eyes in the darkness,
like a ghost, you said
'i am melinda, i have a face'

Well. That was pretty ignorant.

Most songs by Death, or any progressive metal band are thoughtful and meaningful. Unlike, say, most Thrash lyrics, "Rattle your goddamn head" and other lyrics aren't so meaningful.

Check out more songs by Death for meaning!

I didn't mean that metal lyrics can't be meaningful or whatever, but that if you want to show them to a group of people, you're gonna want them to be intelligable. I also know it's possible to have all cleans in metal, or very understandable growls, but metal certainly isn't the first genre that I'd go to for something like this.

Mea Culpa (My fault) - The Human Abstract.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRA2Zv-ZvEw

We shared a common trade of reasoning out the years
Of failed affections and faces to forget
You should have told me
That the ties that made it all worth the while
Were quickly becoming a race to the blame
I tried to gain the advantage over you
Its plain to see theres nothing I could do or say
I tried to gain the advantage over you
A sad parade with nothing left to lose or gain
I could feel it coming
Like a train wreck, rumbling off the tracks
With every ounce of strength
I strain to pay back that dirty money
And the fortune abstract, but theres no feeling left intact
For the victim is now a god,
Doling out judgment, strike with divining rod
I dont want to get involved, looks like youre doing fine
But when I lay up at night, I can feel your eyes
And I can see your eyes, and I go rushing in to a world inside
Where theres none in between, and nothing can be denied
Struck down and stripped of pride,
That I could forgive you for once in our lives
But I failed, and I dont know why, Ill never know why
I failed and I dont know why

I don't think he's worried about how much the class likes the music. I wouldn't be.

The point of underground bands is their not popular or famous most of the time. Thus there is a good chance they suck.

It's not about liking it, it's about understanding the lyrics, which is what the whole assignment is based on.

The teacher makes a copy of the lyrics for each student, so that's not a problem.

I'd say Runes to My Memory or Windowpane/In My Time of Need.

heal me,
Lift me back up to the Sun

i was thinking the same thing
one of my favorites is To Become Shelter and Salvation

I am not able to tell you by words what I feel.... anymore.
To become shelter and salvation
To become shelter and salvation
Those so magnificent loveful waves reach far beyond the shore of my body.

I weep for the pain I have ever caused you even I know
it is the teacher leading us towards the light.
Learn to read from the eyes - they are the open gates to heart.

The waves of so magnificent loveful energy are flowing through and among
my fingers and my body is bathing in that purifying bath.

I wish to become shelter and salvation...

I was thinking that because it's honestly a very straightforward song, yet very deep at the same time.

It always reminds me of a Viking Metal version of One
Catch me,
heal me,
Lift me back up to the Sun

Observation through Metamorphosis by Subterranean Masquerade

"And now... I'm lying here
Watching in silence
The process, almost complete,
This door is locked, enchanted with demise

And an image foreseen from the other room... Is this me?

The struggling to gain the throne of his own senses,
Dressed in disguise,
They paint him white, from head to toe
Oblivious to the void, its absence will apply

Staring, at the edge of time
Circulating without remorse
No regret for knowing too much
And staring at the eye of my world

The walls will stand tall and proud tomorrow
In this place where time stands still
Impossible to cure my image,
Impossible to cut my will

Mirrors upon mirrors of my soul trapped in a maze,
But it's useless to express the pain
Room 63 is silent tonight
Behind the door, you can barely hear
Footsteps to another dream
From here

Will you hear?"

"Jätkät hei, mä lähen meneen ny ihan oikeesti"
"Hei Ankku hei, ennen ku lähet ni kato mitä mä toin sulle"
"Ei jumalauta, hyvännäkönen. Siis eiks tää oo siis...."
"On on, sixpack, kyllä"
"Eihän sun ois tarvinnu hyvä mies, sitä paitsi meill' on noita väkeviä"
"Nii nii, mut aamuks!"

If you can find the English translation for that, you could also do that song. It's pretty easy to get.

Haha, yes! Perfect comparison! Or even just the Viking version of any non-Viking war song.

just do the song orion by metallica
most deep and meaningful lyrics in any song ive ever heard
no seriously though into the crypt of rays by celtic frost

Years of plead, behind the walls
Chambers and vaults, Scenes of fright
Unspoken Words, in pain and dread
140 lives passed his hands

Gilles De Ray's... the perverted son
The holy man... hanged by nobility
Into The Crypts of Rays...

Alluring children for his masses
Robbing and buying young souls
Sacrifice to morbid demons
Satisfy his repulsive sexual lust

Gilles De Ray's... the perverted son
The holy man... hanged by nobility
Into The Crypts of Rays...

"So this is for the morbid one,
The braveless and sick
Shivering laughter shrilled through the tombs
Sexual offence and perverted rites
Watching them limp and die...
Wizards and darkness, Gilles' dreams
Halfway came true..."

As a late medieval's French marshall
Unrestrained, with endless ambitions
Personal guard for Jeanne D'Arc
...the rising of his soul to god...

Gilles De Ray's... the perverted son
The holy man... hanged by nobility
Into The Crypts of Rays...

Overdone Mystism and
Desperate Satanism (Ha!)
Are just one small step apart
There's no human scheme in the beyond...

Gilles De Ray's... the perverted son
The holy man... hanged by nobility
Into The Crypts of Rays...
