I need something to do when I don't feel like playing guitar. I feel that video games are a waste of time so I want to learn to play piano/keyboard. What's a good keyboard to start on? I'd prefer it to be around $200.

What do you plan on doing with it?

Organ stuff such as Deep Purple or Boston
Or Classic Piano such as Coldplay?

What features do you need?

It's going to be rough finding a good keyboard for under 200 bucks.
My Roland was $3500 but it rapes all.

I'll check this thread again in a minute when you answer my questions.

On piano.

You can get a little MIDI keyboard for cheap I think. It'll be weird to learn on since it isn't full size.
You can get them full size.

I didn't actually think of that lol. I was mostly going to try playing between the buried and me and children of bodom kind of stuff with it. Also learn some theory and play some soft music when I'm bored/wow the folks. Here's an example of what I want to play

I really don't know shit about features. I guess something with a lot of cool sounding shit on it?

I'm looking at getting a micro Korg, they're pretty good, only problem being, they're 500 then you need to buy a speaker/amp for them, that's my understanding anyway.

Meh. Check your classifieds or something. Not really worth the investment of an expensive keyboard if you're not sure if you're going to stick with it.

There's tones of cheap keyboards with effects and synths on them you can get at Sears and crap like that. Their fine for all your doing, which is screwing around.

Instead of investing a lot of money you could get the cheapest one you can find and some books to go along with it. Then if you decide to stick with it you can save up for a decent one, if you don't then you wouldn't have wasted that much money :]

Ya I'll probably play a really cheap one and see what happens. Who knows maybe I'll end just as serious about it as I am with guitar. What starter books do you guys recommend?

This is one I've got http://www.cqout.com/item.asp?id=3947913

It comes with a cd so you can hear exactly how it should sound when you practice some of the exercises. It takes you right from beginner to playing "Moonlight" by Beethoven.
