So everything went fine today until just a few minutes ago.

I went to a very-mini-metal-concert at some kids house. There were a bunch of kids in little bands playing thrash, so I went to enjoy the festivities.

The thing is, they were LOUD! The amplifiers were two Marshall stacks right next to the drums.

After they were all done playing, one of them got on the mike and said, "Hey <SonataFanica>, come up here and play some power metal!" And everyone started cheering.

I've been playing for about three years, and I practice every day. So I picked a song that I could play perfectly (except for the sweeps ) and grabbed a guitar.

The song was "Stratofortress" by Stratovarius. *click*

Well, I go out in front of the 35 or so people and start to play, no backing band, just a friend on drums who barely knows the song.

So he starts banging on the drums insanely, and I start playing the notes. Problem is; I can't hear myself playing. Not a single note. The drums were so loud that i couldn't hear a thing. (Mind you, this is my first time ever playing in front of people.)

Well, we get through with the song, and I look out into the crowd. Here are the expressions that I see.

:stickpoke

So I suddenly start feeling self-conscious. I try to play one more chord, and now that the drums aren't going, I can hear it.

Not only has the guitar been completely untuned the whole time, it had tuning locks keeping it untuned.

It was horrible.

Thoughts/similar experiences?

tl;dr I "sucked at guitar" in front of about 35 people.

This way you'll never forget again to check that you're in tune!! And you didn't notice any problems with your actually guitar playing skill, which is good.

Learn from it, move on, and claim that you were intoxicated if anybody talks to you about it.

Ahhh shit. i know exactly what u mean the same thing happened for my band at a gig (minus the detuned guitars part) the drums overpowered everything and no one could hear any solos or the basic melody of the chord. I was so frustrated

Look on the bright side. You got to experience playing in front of an audience. You've seen first hand how things can go wrong, and can now prevent these incidents in future.

Also, you know you don't "suck at guitar" so the opinion of 35 or so people hearing you play once isn't the end of the world.

Are you sure it wan't in drop c or anything.

Don't worry dude, shit happens. It just sucks that it happened on your first time playing in front of people. All you have to do is go out again and show the world that you can shred. Then you'll feel like a ****ing god and you'll get pussy!

Dude, i know exactly how you feel.

I was at a jazz gig, and this violin player got up on stage to do a few songs with us. So im playing through some standards for the first time, and i need to analyze for a few minutes before i can get the chord changes/key changes, etc down pat. Nope, he points at me to solo and i dont know where the heck we are. Needless to say i effed up so hard.

So ya, sucky feeling isnt it.

Yeah, I know how you feel. I was playing in front of about a hundred or so people at one point. I was practicing before anything started and I played my lead parts perfectly, but when the music did start and everybody started playing, I messed up pretty massively. Ugh...luckily my amp wasn't turned up loud enough for that song, so it wasn't all that noticeable.
