i reall like the body and shape of the telecaster but heres the thing. i play metal. do u think i can pull off metal if i buy a mim tele and maybe put hot rails in it. i play like standard e and drop d tunings. is there a humbucker fender tele within the same price range?

Well, here's two things: Try the Fender Jim Root signature (which has EMGs), or one of Ron Wood's ESP models.

When the telecaster was first made, it's creator had NO IDEA how versatile that guitar would turn out to be.

Friend of mine writes in drop A, mostly 5 or 11/8, and he uses his tele.

Another chum plays stuff from Hendrix to Metallica, and he uses his tele for that.

...yeah, that guitar can do anything.

ANYTHING!

yeah my tele handles distortion extremely well, better than my SG which had 2 hums in it

Either of the John 5 Teles would work. Squier has a '72 Tele Custom with humbuckers in it, it should work well too.

EDIT: One of the guitar players in Flyleaf uses a Tele, and he gets a pretty heavy sound. If you get a Tele and dont like the sound of it stock, I would go for some EMG Tele pickups. No routing, and you still get active power.

they'd all work best with a better amp tho.

and hot rails dont sound exactly like a full sized humbucker.

I saw brutal truth about a month ago and their guitarist was using a tele and a strat.

such a versatile guitar. But stay away form hot rails.
#17
dude, why not just get a tele for playing stuff that isn't meant to be heavily distorted? clearly you have several guitars much better suited for that style. but if you insist on it, you will probably need to spend a bit more than the standard tele costs to get one with humbuckers in it. i personally think Jim Root's signature is pretty cool. certainly more costly though.

With a pair a proper pickup, yes. Most prefer stacked humbuckers.

Turning up the gain/distortion on single coils=/= humbucker sound

After jenny pointed it out, there is only one way you'll get decent distortion with a telecaster, silvertone. That is: buying a new amp.
#21
ure also best off getting a tele with darker tonewoods, and a rosewood fretboard, for the darker tone

If you have the right amp and effects (and playing skills), you can do just about anything with just about any guitar. That includes metal with a tele. Come to think of it, I know somebody who plays metal on one. It doesn't sound half bad either.

Ritchie Kotzen isn't a metal player but he get fairly good distorted tones from his dual rail in his sig tele whatever that is (starts with a C i think)

look into the "Tremol-No," that thing has saved my life. i hated the floyd on my RG too, but i dropped that thing in there, and now it's like a new guitar, its so awesome.
