What EMG setup is good for thrash metal?
I know Metallica uses 81 60 (I think?) And Zakk Wylde uses 81 85 (I think again), but he doesn't really play thrash.

Suggestions?

dude, only James uses 81/60.
Kirk uses 81/81....

Oh. So I'll get a 3rd pickup installed on my headstock and it'll be another 81.

81/81 for solos

81/85 for riffs/solos

81/60 for some solos/mostly riffs

You could also put the 85 in the bridge, some people like it (I hate it).

Hm...
Thanks for actually giving insight to my inquiry.

Well you never really specified what your style is or what your position in a band usually is. Are you a rhythm guitarist or lead? That information paired with my post should tell you what set to get.

IMO the 81/60 set is pretty great for all around stuff, but again depending on what your job/playing style is you may want a different set. Don't expect a specific answer without first asking a specific question.

I find the 81's and 85's too be quite nice, but a little thin in my opinion. Turning down the tone knobs and volume knobs with these helps make a pretty alright to my ears clean tone as well.
