so today our band actually had to write a song (some music class thingy). long story short our bass player/rhythm guitarist (whatever he decides to be that day) is a control freak. me and the drummer tried to write a cool rock riff, he shoots it down then steals the guitar teachers riff and claims it as his own work. then when working with the music teachers to put this song together he completely changes the lyrics and the layout of the song, then doesn't learn the song and just improvises a solo over the entire song.

the real problem starts here.

i want to steer the band back on course a little (put in bits of advice, write a few songs etc), but i don't want to be the one hunting down members when it's practice time or writing entire songs or organising everything (which is what will happen if i try to take a tiny bit of control). but i also don't want to turn this band situation into a dictatorship (which is what it already is).

the other thing is, i can't really leave because all the other bands worth joining already have members and are 2 years younger than me (i don't wanna look like a freak playing with younger kids).

kick his ass out. he's obviously selfish and for him to stay in, would only hurt your success as a band.

i hate to say it but you might have to kind of take control of everything. in my band, i write all the songs (including the lyrics, even though i don't sing), schedule shows and practices, mix our recordings, and basically do everything, but it sounds a lot worse than it is. nobody in my band looks at it as a dictatorship, and they've tried to write and do stuff, but it just doesn't turn out as good.

have a group meeting and tell him how it is. hell if you can wait till you can video tape the incedent happening again and then show him how he is acting. he will most likely feel ashamed and do something about it, if not he just dosent need to be in your band.

i would feel really bad about kicking him out because he is my best friend and i have known him for near 8 years (a long time for me, i have socialising issues).

our drummer (who agrees with me) is also considering leaving because he doesn't like the music our dictator writes and has 3 other band opportunities (all of which do not need a guitarist).

me taking control regardless of said issues is not good either as even if the rest of the band decided someone needs to, in a week it would turn into them screaming fachism and the jews rebelling (that joke is alot funnier because we call said dictator a jew).

should really just talk to the guy. tell him how you and the drummer I assume want to have a more equal voice in the band. in most cases that works amazingly. and if all that dosn't work well spite how its never a great feeling to kick out a friend from the band you may have to. if a person is draging down the band like that its just too painful to even play with them. so best to just kick him out. or just quit and join a diffent band works too.

Surely if he's your best friend, he'll listen when you tell him to get a grip? If not, maybe he's not such a good friend after all. I dunno.

But seriously, if you taking a little bit of control means you have to do everything, your band are not being very co-operative or working well together at all, so maybe you could just consider leaving it?

that "joke" isn't particularly funny at all - I suggest you edit your post and remove it.
