mastodon uses jcm800.

they ARE in fact the best band ever. go with them

More to the point, dave mustaine used an 800 on megadeth's original shit. That plus a tubescreamer ought to get you there.
I don't give a shit if you listen to me or not

Nice one, tit.

Why post?

800 plus boost (maybe) is that thunk of a Megadeth sound!
#9
Most definitely the 800, maybe even a decent OD for a boost if you want.

I say 900 if you need metal tones.

Lets face it, the JCM 800 isn't really a metal amp. While it can do those things, it's primarily a hard rock amplifier. Even cranked, it doesn't have quite enough gain for a lot of metal applications. Most people tend to throw ODs and EQs in front of it.

The JCM 900 on the other hand can do metal, and it does metal very well. It can do metal right out of the box. Especially the SL-X. Great amp.

I'm more of an 800 fan myself though.

800 + OD pedal.
will get you the most. maybe not death or other extreme metal tones, but it will cover the most.

Kramer Focus 3000
Ibanez ATK300
Rocktron Chameleon
Digitech IPS33B
Ibanez WH10
Korg Pitchblack

800 + OD will get you early Megadeth style tones

But like hatebreeder said, the 900 has more gain on the tap to nail metal.

if you got the cash consider the kerry king jcm 800. its got a boost circuit in the preamp and a built in gate. a buddy got one last week and it will give you the brutalz. i was skeptical of it at first, thought it would just be a "slayer sound only" amp but its actually pretty versatile. the beast switch will give you a very middy sound but you can take care of that with an eq pedal. if you want to go used get the 800 and a good od like a maxon or tubescreamer.

Laney VH100

Usually, when someone wants a Marshall, you can't replace it with something else. I had a VH100R and it was good and all but it just wasn't quite what I wanted. It's a very buzzy and thin sounding amp in character. JCM 800s are a lot fatter sounding and aren't quite as grainy.

Well not quite.......

Studio - they use the 800 together with Mesa amps.

And live, if you bother to look - they also happen to use an 800, a JTM and Laneys

Go for the Ceriatone copy if you wanna get one though, you won't regret it.
Then there's this band called Slice The Cake...

Bunch of faggots putting random riffs together and calling it "progressive" deathcore.
Stupid name.
