well after customizing my les paul, which i love, me and my grandpa are planning another build.

i was thinking of metalifying either a strat or a tele. i wanna get some custom paint.
is it possible? could i throw in some emgs, which i have on my lp, and it would sound metal? and would one work better than the other?

and for a strat, would i have to do some routing if i wanted to put a FR in? just throwing some ideas out there.

thanks.

If it's a strat, i'm assuming it's made from Alder, so it'll sound "metal" but it'll be bright.
Iron Maiden used a strat... so they're "metal"able. It'll just be bright, that's all.

A paint job will be expensive if someone else does it. And if you do it, try not to make it too complicated unless you're good at painting.

As for the FR, i'm pretty sure you'll have to cut out a bit of your guitar in order for it to sit in there and be able to bend back.

Well if you just want to dive than you wont have to route but if you want to be able to pull up your gonna have to route it

I'm assuming he'd want to pull back... so...
TS, you're gonna have to route it.

Another thing, it doesn't matter if you've got EMGs or some first act pups, it's the AMP that'll make it sound "metal".
Just thought i'd throw that in there.

yeah, i know. im getting one for x-mas. just gotta get up to GC and try out a few. cause right now ive got a SS crate amp, and i heard that the emg's SCREAM through a tube amp. they dont sound too special through my amp. of course, they sound better than the ghetto stock ones it had.

so is routing something that i would take to a specialist. or could i do it myself?

dam u. my parents said if i want a tube amp, i have to buy it myself. AHHHHH!!!

Yes, EMGs are amazing through tube amps, and thts cause there actually designed to drive a tube amp.

routing is very easily possible, provided u have a router and a TEMPLATE!!! NEVER FREEHAND ROUTE!!!

and might i suggest better tuners, as well?

my grandpa prolly knows how to do that type of stuff.

whats wrong with the tuner? just no good stock ones?

Well if hes gonna route for a locking nut anyway, the tuners should be fine. I just hope you know what your getting into when it comes to routing for the bridge/nut. Must be absolutely perfect.

Ah yes, and you'll need new Potentiometers for the EMG's such as 500K ones or hell, why not even 1Meg pots from Stewmac? Those would open up your tone and make it nice and bright.

EMGs come with the new pots they need when you buy them. Also EMGs use smaller values because of the active circuitry. DO NOT use 500k, or 1Meg pots.

yeah, i figured it wouldnt be too easy. but like i said, im still in the planning stage. nothing is final.

EMG's come with correct value pots. do NOT use 500k, thts for standard buckers, and 1 meg is ridiculous for any guitar.

Ive always wanted to take a strat and customize it. i did it to a Kramer focus 3000 and it turned out like shit. hope yours turns out better. and YES the EMGs come with everything you need. install everything that comes with them. might want to try an afterburner kit too, depending on whether or not you like just the EMG's.

Another thing, play the guitar for a while before you buy. theres nothing like buying a guitar, stripping it down, customizing it to your specifications, and putting it together, only to find that it plays like shit.

yes, im aware the emg's come with everything you need. i already have some in my les paul. i was wondering what the afterburner kit was. what is it?
i know that i like the feel of a strat because i used to have a squire, which im sure is close enough.

it's a preamp boost that pushes your signal a little more, to give a more powerful sound with distortion, and a little brighter sound from cleans, i believe

Just thought i'd throw that in there.

The pickups are the guitars original source, nothing is more important to get a good sound than them. I have had great amps with cheap pickups and even a great amp sounds like crap. Great pickups in a cheap amp sounds better, great pickups in a great amp = great sound. I love my emgs, my other guitars sound very weak for metal and are more for blues, rock etc.

just because one guitar has the same body shape as another doesn't mean they have the same neck, feel etc

As for the floyd rose, this thread will help.
