some strats are wired so that 2 of your pickups become a humbucker in a certain switch position.

which & what year strats? which pups make up the H?

It's because the middle pickup is Reverse wound/reverse polarity (RW/RP) so when you use the neck or bridge with it you effectively make a humbucker.
Current Gear:
LTD MH-400 with Gotoh GE1996T (EMG 85/60)
PRS SE Custom 24 (Suhr SSH+/SSV)
Ibanez RG3120 Prestige (Dimarzio Titans)
Squier Vintage Modified 70s Jazz V
Audient iD22 interface
Peavey Revalver 4, UAD Friedman BE100/DS40

You CAN play anything with anything....but some guitars sound right for some things, and not for others. Single coils sound retarded for metal, though those who are apeshit about harpsichord probably beg to differ.

ok, but which strats are wired to make a Humbucker?

what years? every model ? squires too?

Probably every one with a HSS or SSS configuration. Not sure about the HSS one... someone might be able to clear that one up.

Any strat with an RWRP middle pup, dude. HSS won't have it, because then the middle and one of the bridge pup coils would be out of phase. Doesn't matter what year or w/e because some are like that and some (cheap knockoffs and such) usually don't.
#6
how would i detect a RWRP from a regular pup?

also, why are people putting in kill switches?

What does your guitar do now that you've got the humbucker in?

my 94 MIM does this. I know the new MIMs do too and I'm sure the others do too, idk about squires though.

It doesn't SOUND meaty like a, bucker, really. But it humbucks. If you know what I'm saying.

I doubt squires' middle pickups are reverse polarity.

Paper on orangutans can become Paper on evolution?

Exactly.
It kills the hum because of the opposite direction of the windings, same as a HB.
But the two singles used together sound different from a HB, because ...

The two singles are in parallel. (The two coils of a HB are in series.)

The two singles are spaced much farther apart than the two coils of a HB.

The two singles and two coils of a HB may also have other differences like pole pieces, magnets, windings. but they will always have the differences I mentioned above.

Easy enough to test.
Put the selector in the Neck position.
Guitar volume and tone at max.
Turn the amp volume up until the hum is obvious.
Move the selector to the Neck and Middle position.
Did the hum get much quieter? RWRP
Did the hum stay about the same? Normal winding & magnetic polarity.

I'm surprised Jim, you of all people here should be able to figure this out.
