Don't know if this is the right forum to post in but I reckon I'll get most replies here.

I'd like to start using samples from various movies in our songs.

Does anyone know where I can get these samples and if there are any problems with copyright?

Also, what kind of software of machine would I need to play these samples? Does anyone have any experience with it?

Thanks Pit.

you need a hardware sampler, a lot of good keyboards have them built in. and yeah you have to get them cleared for use, how you do this exactly varies depending on who owns the copyright for that partcular movie.

Would it just be ok if we put the names of the movie/director in the credits of a cd?

no, since it's a copywrited you need to get permission and probably pay royalties.

Just do it anyway.

You could do that, but copyright owners love to fuck over people who use uncleared samples.

Haha, annoying topic...for my band anyway...

We used to use a different sample at the beginning of every show, so that was like...2-4 movies a week...

Point being the production company has rights over the film, and they will pay the relevant parties on your behalf, with your money.

We only recently got hit up about it when we signed the contract to open for whitechapel next year. And all we have to do is pay $25 per usage to the production company. So $25 a show, we decided it wasn't worth it we only earn $250 between us for a show so we're giving up the sample thing and replacing them with us recording our own stupidity and playing that. the last one was my bass player yelling "Just because it has less strings it doesn't me I'm less of a man!!!"

so yeah, hardware wise, you can use a sampler as has already been said, or if you're buddies with the sound guy, just line-in from your ipod or whatever and tell him when to press play.

It's not the directors, it's the producers.

So I had to take a massive dump, and I went in the bassment. So it's been down there for a while and the stench is terrible and i think it's seeping into the floor.
