that's a pretty broad range... Personally with $500 I would ook into Schecter and maybe ESP and mayyyybe Epiphone, not really any other brands.

Is there such a thing as a heavy riff with out chugging on the e string?

Dean makes some good guitars in that range too.
GUITARS:
Fender Strat w/ Seymour duncans
Agile Explorer w, SD livewire metal
Fender Telecaster w/ hot rail

PEDALBOARD:
Boss chromatic tuner
Ibanez weeping demon
*Digitech Whammy*
MXR Smart Gate

Genre?

If you're looking for a Metal sound try out some Schecters or Ibanez. For Rock/Blues try an MIM Strat.

well, it depends. if its your first guitar your gonna want something on the lower end so you dont mess up a nicer guitar. if you're just looking for a guitar, look for what you want in an instrument rather than price range (of course you have to keep the price concious at the same time though)

didnt you just start a thread in GB & A about EMG's in your warlock?
because a great guitar through a bad amp, sounds bad

TS what's your current rig?
EDIT: Checked your profile. You need a new amp, not a new guitar.

Yea thats what I will do I will buy a biffer amp this summer and a different model.
Yea, judging by what you like music-wise, you could get a decent used metal amp for $400-$650.
I wondered why the frisbee was getting bigger, then it hit me.
