Haven't read that article, but logic would say that it's heavily in debt.

things like that happen all the time

Ken Bates bought Chelsea FC for £1
and Rover bought themselves from BMW for £10

Three times does not mean it happens "all them time".
There have been two world wars in which millions of people died, but that doesn't happen all the time.

It does occasionally happen, yes.

suing people for nominal damages isn't uncommon. nominal damages are usually 1 of whatever currency the country uses. It's usually done to enforce a right.

they sue for nominal damages and when they win they use the court ruling to persuade the other party to comply with the terms of the contract.

the damages themselves aren't important, it's the fact that they're in the right.

I don't get it. What's the normal price for a TV Guide in America?

There's been more than two world wars.

Just because they're aren't referred to as "World War x" doesn't mean it's not a world war.

Bugger.
You win, although that's not really buying something for a ridiculously low amount, although, in a sense, it is.

That's not the point of my post.
I hesitated to use the WW example as I knew there have been many, but I was unable to find a suitable example from the top of my head.

my point is that it's not always the amount that's important. it's the fact that the ownership will have changed hands.

the nominal fee is just to validate the contract.

Seeing as it's a private-equity fund that's bought it, it probably won't exist in it's current form much longer...

You can buy TV Times here for £1

Uh..The whole company was bought, not just one individual magazine.

then you'd be right.

That's how much the private equity fund OpenGate Capital has agreed to pay Macrovision for the unprofitable magazine and all its liabilities. The cover price, by way of comparison, is $2.99.
The $1 was just to make the transfer of ownership a legal sale.
