Does anyone know the name of the thin piece of wood going down the middles back of a Stratocaster neck?

Cheers.

Don't they just lay the truss rod in before they put the fingerboard on?

some necks don't put a fingerboard on, they just make the headstock, neck and fingerboard out of one solid piece of wood.

I've got a rosewood neck, and it still has a skunk stripe.

the reason they don't is because Gibson patented it and so Fender can't do it that way

Thats exactly what its for, to get the truss in - & even though they don`t need to with a rosewood board, Fender do anyway!

It's becuase in the 80s the patent expired and they can all do it now but Fender stuck with it as a seperation/trademark or whatver you want to call it

Was it only a patent for electrics? Because martin doesn't have the skunk stripe, either, and they were certainly before the 80s. Or did they get grandfathered in because they've been around for so long?

Fenders didn't have the skunk stripe when they were first produced. I thought that was added in the 70s.
